"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
Ramin Karimloo Idina Menzel (I actually do love her) Sierra Boggess Jessie Mueller Aaron Tveit Josh Young (I found him spectacular as Che in the Evita tour)
My favorite is Jonathan Freeman. He stands out in comic roles with his dramatic, elegant voice. I admire his versatility --he can also ham it up with a sharper, thinner voice. I love it when he thunders and fills the whole theater. He's a vocal gymnast and a fantastic performer.
If you don't want people's answers, don't ask the question. It doesn't make you cool to diss popular people.
I love musicals, and I love performers, but I don't separate them out as vocalists. They win me over with their entire performance.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
"Carson has combined his passion for helping children with his love for one of Cincinnati's favorite past times - cornhole - to create a unique and exciting event perfect for a corporate outing, entertaining clients or family fun."
I just love the tone and emotion of Sutton Foster's voice. It's very unique but still technically gorgeous. And Laura Osnes's voice just makes me happy. Oh, and I do have to say Idina Menzel.
Male: Aaron Tveit, Stark Sands, Stephen Pasquale, Norbert Leo Butz, and Jeremy Jordan Female: Laura Osnes, Caissie Levy, Kelli O'Hara, and Jennifer Damiano
Also, a couple of maybes - I have only heard Jessie Mueller on the Beautiful OBCR, but she sounds amazing. And I like Idina Menzel too, but I tend to prefer the parts where she does not belt. Don't get me wrong, her belt is great, but I love the more subtle tone of her voice - like in "I'm Not That Girl" from Wicked.
