I have very recently fallen in love with the cast recording of Stephen Sondheim's musical Assassins and Jason Robert Brown's musical Parade and am dying to see staged productions of them. But I realise that I've missed two revivals of these shows by four or so years. Does anyone know how I can keep up to date with when another production will be staged or whether it is likely another production will be staged soon?
There were rumours for a long time of Jamie Lloyd planning to do a revival of Assassins as part of his season at Trafalgar Studios, but it looks like he did Urinetown at the St James instead. It's very popular with amateur groups, though, so it won't be long before a production in London I'm sure.
As for Parade, having been done at the Donmar 5 years ago and at Southwark Playhouse 3 years ago (and by SEDOS at the Bridewell maybe about the same length of time ago!) I think it's unlikely there will be another production any time soon.
Given that you've only just discovered these, can I at least suggest you listen to the cast recording for Jason Robert Brown's new musical, The Bridges of Madison County, which is available for free on http://popwatch.ew.com/2014/04/11/bridges-of-madison-county-original-cast-recording-listen/? I have been listening to it non-stop since it went live and, having seen the show itself last week, I am very happy to keep doing so...
Parade also had a revival at the Southwark Playhouse. I'd love to see Assassins as it's one of the few Sondheim's I've left to see. Hoping the Menier might do a revival.
Thanks, I shall keep my fingers crossed for both. Also thanks for sharing the link! I've only heard the short snippet from the advert but wow Jason Robert Brown really does know how to write a good score. I can't stop listening to Falling into you. I'll have to cross my toes now for a West End transfer of this too.
Southwark Playhouse done a production of Parade about 3 years ago.
It was rumoured that Assassins was going to be done, as part of Jamie Lloyd Trafalgar transformed tenure, maybe this could be part of the second season. If not I imagine the Menier Chocolate Factory will do this, as they have a good track record with the more obscure Sondheim pieces.
But I imagine both will be done in the next several years, as both are very popular. Also London has a thriving fringe scene now, that tends to lean to these pieces of work.
