"Clerks at the art supply store would not speak on the record, but said that they had been told to expect a round of layoffs next Thursday and that they had been told to sell everything in the store at 35 percent off."

J & R property is being re-developed as "an unprecedented retailing concept and social mecca.”, according to their PR team.

Pearl Paint has been a mere shadow of itself for the past decade and a half. Not the great Art Supply Store it was in the 70's when it was actually next door to it'd present location (Canal Jeans occupied the ground floor.

Pearl Paint's interior always seems like it was about to collapse, especially in the stairways. As much as I hate seeing old New York classic places die, this building is better off going.

J&R - again, I hate to see it go, but I was never fond of the interior of the store. Great bargains though. I've gotten cameras there.

Got to make way for those Chik-fil-A restaurants.

J&R is closing for renovations. I think they have been getting their butts kicked by B&H Photo for the past 10 years. That is a LOT of real estate to pay for if your sales aren't up there.

The Rizzoli loss is sad. That was a nice store.

Once J+R closed all their stores and moved into one tower,it was not a good sign.

Their music store took a beating when ipods became popular. And their electronics store always had competition from the likes of Sam Goody and later Best Buy. Plus 9/11 didn't do their business any favors.

J & R 's m music and DVD departments are gone. Last year I purchased the DVD's of "Sweet Charity" and "Flower Drum Song" for $5 each because neither are available on blu-ray or as digital downloads.

CONWAYs, 34th st is shuttered! What? Now I'm beginning to hate NY. Stop with the exorbitant rents and redevelopment already. Where am I going to buy my 2.99 summer t-shirts?

Sadly NYC has been becoming one large strip mall. Where there were mom an Pop pharmacies now stand Duane Reades, a family restaurant, an Olive Garden. Gone are the diverse neighborhoods.

So sad that another piece of what made NY great being chipped away. Now it's getting really difficult to buy art supplies without ordering them online these days. I think now the best alternative would be shopping online at Jerrysartarama.com as they offer better deals and prices along with affordable shipping rates. Any other recommendations?

I go to Blick's . there are four locations in the city. Or, I can go to NY Central on 3rd and 11th. Lee's also. And Michael's, on 99th and Columbus, has tons of art supplies. Plenty of choices in the city.
