Adele Dazeem the 21st Century Broadway Star

So, she just made the cover of Billboard Magazine, with the title "The (Not So) New 'It"' Girl". Good for her.

I hope she is having fun with all of this.

Wow...good for her! I expect her to be nom'd for a Grammy for "Let it Go".

All this mainstream success makes me so happy I could cry.

I HADN'T EVEN REALIZED SHE COULD BE NOMINATED FOR A GRAMMY! I'm so used to the the Lopezes being the ones eligible that I didn't consider the fact that there's a category for Solo Pop Vocal. Yessssss.

I absolutely think Idina will be nominated for a Grammy as Best Female Pop Vocal.

Her performance sold that song.

EDIT: Also, if it's nominated for Record of the Year (a possibility too), that nomination goes to both the performer and the production team. (Song of the Year would go to the writers.)

She could end up with a couple of Grammy nominations and potential wins.

Damn...great picture, too.

Of course luck has much to do with a career as a performer. But after two decades, one has to think talent and smart career choices may have a lot to do with it as well.

I'm starting to think John Travolta was paid for his mangling of her name!

I think timing is probably a better choice of words than lucky in the above instances, as it's not completely random/out of the blue, but there is an undeniable factor of chance involved.

It does make sense, but would be brought into question by the long-standing success of Disney's "pop single versions" in the past 20 years.

I'm wondering though if part of that is due to technology. For instance, you could only hear the pop versions of those Disney songs on the radio. iTunes, Spotify, etc. didn't exist, so you had no choice. When you bought the CD/cassette tape, they had both versions of the song on there. Did the singles of the pop version actually sell more than the original, movie version? I'm wondering because I know a LOT of Disney fans who aren't musical theatre fans, and when they listen to the songs, they listen to the originals. I'm wondering if the popularity of the movie version over the pop version would have been demonstrated earlier had people been given the choice then for those other Disney songs.

Also, does Idina's version of "Let it Go" actually get played on the radio? I haven't heard it, but then again I haven't heard Demi's on the radio either.

Jimmy, what are you doing here in the middle of the night? It's almost 9 PM!

It does get played up here (Upstate NY). I have heard it playing at banks, gas stations, waiting rooms, etc. The radio stations don't play it as much but they do play it every so often. I don't think 98pxy (our local "big wig" radio station) has played it though.

I've heard it on our AC station (San Antonio, TX) several times now - and it's being picked up by the mainstream stations like Z100 and KISSFM, etc.

It dropped out of the Billboard Top 10 this week, so its peak may be over, but I think its airplay will keep expanding.

Billboard has uploaded a video of the shoot, and some Q&A's. I guess the full article gets released on Monday.

She looks great, and admits that Travolta's flub has been great for her.
More Idina Stuff.

And yes, the billboard article states that the song is beginning to get adult contemporary and top 40 radio play.

Luck never hurts but you have to take full advantage of that luck when it happens IMO which Ms. Menzel has clearly done.

Oh, the thought of her getting a Grammy nomination is beautiful indeed. I would be surprised, given the way things tend to go at the Grammys and how far off they are, but a girl can dream, eh?

I agree it would be a wonderful thing but she will probably get beat out by people like Kayne - lol

Kanye will never be nominated for "Best Pop Solo," thank goodness (if he is, I give up). So far in this new non-gender-specific category, women have thus far dominated the category in nominations and wins.

2011
Lady Gaga - "Yoü and I"
Bruno Mars - "Grenade"
Katy Perry - "Firework"
P!nk - "F*CKin' Perfect"
Adele - "Someone Like You" WINNER

2012
Kelly Clarkson - "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)"
Carly Rae Jepsen - "Call Me Maybe"
Katy Perry - "Wide Awake"
Rihanna - "Where Have You Been"
Adele - "Set Fire to the Rain" WINNER

2013
Sara Bareilles - "Brave"
Bruno Mars - "When I Was Your Man"
Katy Perry - "Roar"
Justin Timberlake - "Mirrors"
Lorde - "Royals" WINNER

While it could be won by a more "mainstream" star, I think she and the song can hold their own against songs like these and earn a nomination.

She deserves all this good fortune. She's an immensely talented and gifted performer. It must have been hard going thru the breakup with Taye. I'm sure all this new found success is softening the blow.

That being said, I strongly feel it is because of FROZEN - and FROZEN alone - that their grosses are so high. The fanatical obsession with that movie and with Idina's song is on a completely different level, and she is now known to the millions...maybe even billions...as "the voice of Elsa" or "that woman who sang Let It Go." I am not sure how long that recognition can last, but I guess we'll see.

LOL...How soon we forget. The ginormous Idina fan base created during Wicked is why their grosses are so high. I attended a couple of her concerts on tour and that is why these grosses don't surprise me in the least. It's been clear for years now that she has a massive following and a rabidly devoted fan base. Being the voice of Elsa might have given it a small boost, but I guarantee that being the voice of a Disney animated princess does not equal name or face recognition. Just ask Jodi Benson, Anika Noni Rose or Judy Kuhn. I seriously doubt any of them could create grosses this high based on their recognition as the voices of Disney heroines. Wicked was a juggernaut (and still is). Anyone else remember the crying candlelight vigil for Idina when she fell through the trapdoor?

She has starred in two musicals (the ONLY TWO MUSICALS) of the past twenty years to reach iconic pop-culture status, Rent and Wicked.

I'd add Chicago and The Lion King to that list.
