Regarding the new Tony rule: I think it would be very telling if the nominating committee decided to only choose four after all is said and done. Just because there is a possibility of doesn't mean there should be. After reading this thread and others in a similar vein, it seems a lot of folks don't think highly enough of four of them (so far) let alone five.
I would be surprised if they only choose four nominees. I think there are 7 musicals "worthy" of a nomination by the standards set most seasons, with those being After Midnight, Bridges, Bullets, Beautiful, Rocky, If/Then and Gentleman's Guide. That cuts 5 possible nominees out of hand and you still have to drop 2 more of the "worthy" set to make 5.
I think we would see a different set of nominees if the nomination process was similar to that of the Oscars, but since this is nomination by committee I think the smaller shows have a better chance.
Marie: Don't be in such a hurry about that pretty little chippy in Frisco.
Tony: Eh, she's a no chip!
Critics might have been mixed, but, audiences LOVE "Beautiful." It definitely will get nominated. The best word of mouth of any show in years. Celebs are frothing at the mouth over it.
Still don't get what papers you guys were reading, did you read all the reviews? Don't let The Times lend more credence to those who did not like the show. If that were the case than neither Kinky Boots or Pippin would have made it to the Tonys last year.
I really think IF/THEN should win best score. Tom Kitt really can write fantastic music. In fact, I think Bring it On also deserved a nomination for best score.
Well this season isn't going to be a Matilda vs. Kinky Boots or Once vs. Newsies situation. This has been a much stronger season for new musicals and therefore the love will generally be spread around and people will be divided into more than two camps for best musical.

Right now, if there were only 4 nominees, I think they would be
After Midnight Gentlemen's Guide (the two of them have gotten the best reviews so far and have stayed open) If/Then Bullets
So who's the fifth nominee? A convincing case could be made for any of the remaining contenders (Aladdin, Beautiful, Bridges, and Rocky), with Rocky being the least likely at this point. Aladdin could be dismissed as fluff, but it might end up getting better reviews than any of the others. Beautiful got very mixed reviews and might be hurt that it's the only jukebox musical of the final choices (and awkward song placement), but it's selling, so it's striking a chord with audiences. Bridges has the pedigree (and slightly better reviews than Beautiful, I think) and could well win Best Score and some people love it. Rocky is an underdog once more, but it is a technical achievement that could only be done on Broadway.
Sales and reviews over the next month will help clarify things.

"you can't run away forever...but there's nothing wrong with getting a good head start"
"well I hope and I pray, that maybe someday, you'll walk in the room with my heart"
My top vote for best musical would have to go to Bullets Over Broadway with If/Then taking home book and score. Actress is a tough one. If you put a gun to my head and made me choose between Kelli O'Hara and Idina Menzel, I wouldn't be able to choose. As impressive as Rocky's scenic design was, I think Bullets Over Broadway will be taking the Tony for that as well.
