I enjoy what I've heard of Neil Patrick Harris in the role. He's less histrionic (and Esparza's histrionics are part of his appeal) but he plays the role well, I thought.
I'm excited for Karen to belt out that song, but eh... Lin-Manuel makes me want to pass. He has some serious taste levels. Not a great actor. Not a great singer.
I know it's been said before, but I'm going to reiterate. I'm VERY underwhelmed by this casting. Karen, I trust, will make for a great 'Susan', but Lin... I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed.
If I remember correctly, Karen said in an interview she has retired, but yet she said that if a role is really good and it does not require a lot of participation (like 8 shows a week and long contracts), then she would do something. So in other words, she is picking and choosing what she wants to do and when. It could be now or 4 years from now and then the next one 6 years from that!
I agree that I don’t think Lin’s voice is as bad as some make it out to be, but, yes, he doesn’t have the strongest Broadway voice. However, for me, what he lacks in vocal power he makes up for in the passion and energy he puts into it.
Very excited for this and couldn’t be more thrilled that it happens to be taking place when I’m in NYC.
I saw “Damn Yankees” years ago, but can’t remember what the ticket-buying process was like – is it usually difficult to score tickets or no? Planning on getting them the day they go on sale, but didn’t know how quickly these things usually sell.
I bought tickets to Tick, Tick... BOOM today at the box office. There are very nice front mezzanine seats (on the sides) for $25. But, slightly off topic, what do people think about Pump Boys and Dinettes? I know it's a matter of taste, but from I understand, there isn't much of a book, and the music is kind of country. I listened to a few cuts on Spotify and it didn't grab me. So I thinking of skipping it. Any thoughts?
Saw Lin in "Merrily..". Was not thrilled that he was cast in the part and wasn't crazy about his performance. He wasn't horrible but he wasn't right for the part. JMO
The casting of Leslie Odom ALMOST got me to buy a ticket but Miranda does not have the voice for the part of Jon in any respect. That is not a part that can be emoted through, unfortunately. I keep trying to give him the benefit of the doubt but he could not even manage 4 bars of harmony with Esparza during MISCAST. So I will take a pass on this one.
