It's official! Idina Menzel will sing "Let it Go" at the Academy Awards!

I like Menzel's interpretation in the film, though sometimes live she sounds a little shouty. The clip of her singing sounds more like she is singing the pop vocal to the film's musical arrangement

Posted: 2/11/14 at 3:21pmI am hoping she sings the song as it is performed in the movie, which is powerful with a sweetness to it, rather than her concert versions of things which seem to either be too strident or occasionally over sung.

She won't sing the song as performed in the movie! She will sing a truncated (probably 30-45 seconds) version because of the time limitations on the Oscar broadcast.
They actually let Adele sing the whole "Skyfall" number but it was a bestselling song by an international recording star, it was the presumed winner and it was the 50th anniversary of the Bond franchise.
If U2 appears (which they probably will) you will see them perform "Ordinary Love" in its entirity.

Posted: 2/11/14 at 8:30pmI beg to differ. The song is a HUGE hit, the album was number one on the Billboard 200 for five weeks. The might cut out a verse, but she will more likely than not perform most of the song.

They typically don't cut the Best Song nominees for length (in 2009 they did a medley of all the songs with just clips from each song, but that is not the norm). And I can't imagine Craig Zadan and Neil Meron wanting to truncate Idina's song.

I'm hoping that they know that people will probably be pretty ticked off if she only sings 30 seconds but U2 plays an entire song.

The last time Ellen hosted, not only were the Original Song nominees represented with at least good chunks of the music, the Original Score nominees were featured in modern dance performances during the telecast. The nominees will all get at least a couple verses and a chorus to show off why they're nominated.

Does the host typically have control over what gets into the broadcast and what doesn't? I mean, if they have a big name like Ellen I wouldn't be surprised. I didn't know that was a thing though haha
If thats the case, then I have no doubt that she will perform the entire song, or at least a large portion of it. Ellen loves musical theater, and this song is empowering to a lot of people.

Posted: 2/12/14 at 7:23amYes, fingerlakes. With the exception of such hosts as Anne Hathaway and James Franco, for example, the majority of hosts (NPH / Ellen / Cystal / etc.) receive a Producer's credit and are integral in the decision-making process.

Posted: 2/12/14 at 10:03amTell me if i'm wrong, but the year Enchanted was nominated, didn't Amy & Kristin sing full versions of both "That's How You Know" & "Happy Working Song"? Frozen is even more popular than Enchanted and this is also a Disney project so I don't see why Idina won't sing the entire song.

Posted: 2/12/14 at 10:32amIn certain years, in order to cut the length of the show, they have shortened some of the performances. Or if the songs did not have stars attached to them, they wouldn't even be performed. But in this case, we have musical theater producers producing the Oscars this year, and I would imagine they don't want to cut a musical theater star. I would hope they wouldn't make Idina fly all the way to LA to sing a thirty second clip, especially when they know she is rehearsing a new show.

They typically have a say in their own material and bits that they want to do. The main producers are in charge of the overall design, layout, and presentation of the awards. Due to the performers scheduled (Idina, Pharrell, U2), they most likely will do what they used to do, which is about 1.5 minute of the song, typically removing one verse and sped up a little.
At least I hope so - I miss seeing the songs performed.

The song is now certified platinum.
They'd really be idiots to truncate it. Disney has intentionally not allowed a full video of Idina's live performance of the song be released - they're clearly waiting for the Oscars to be the "big bang," so to speak.

I actually really love her voice. It might be because I listen to so much Chenoweth, but it's actually a relief to hear someone sing not perfectly like Cheno (perfect as in Cheno's perfect diction, and all of that nonsense that I don't know because I'm not a singer).
I'm happy for her!
