Yesterday Wednesday 22nd marked the 20th Anniversay of the film release in Australia, P J Hogan the director announced the show was being turned into a musical with a view to open in Australia, than Broadway in the 2016 season.

Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist. Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino. This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more. Tazber's: Reply to Is Stephen Schwartz a Practicing Christian

If Mamma Mia has sole theatrical rights to ABBA's music, there could be a problem.

I'm not sure a wedding-set musical with ABBA music would work...

This is weird timing for this announcement. Last night I almost said MURIEL'S WEDDING as a response to the other thread about what would make for a good jukebox musical.

This is weird timing for this announcement. Last night I almost said MURIEL'S WEDDING as a response to the other thread about what would make for a good jukebox musical.

And I just finished predicting there that a musical of MURIEL'S WEDDING (my favorite film, BTW) would end up looking like a remake of MAMMA MIA! The movie is ALREADY a musical, albeit not an R&H-style show.

To paraphrase Sondheim paraphrasing Hammerstein, the only reasons to adapt a project are if (a) you think you can improve it (MURIEL cannot be improved) or (b) if you intend to take an entirely new approach to it (and what's the point of that if you are selling a project based on the public's love for it?).

P.J. Hogan needs to come up with a second idea. Surely he has two in him!

We already have a ABBA musical about a wedding: Mamma Mia!

If this is true, they might have to close Mamma Mia to avoid confusion.

It really depends on how they choose to adapt the source material. At the time the film was released, ABBA had not yet experienced their resurgence in popularity. Muriel's obsession with ABBA supported her outlook on occasion, but more importantly, it defined the more nerdy and dated aspects of her character (particularly in Australia, which had a very rabid and short-lived obsession with ABBA unlike any other country). The only time a song was used in the plot was in the karaoke scene (or she'd sing a couple of lines). The rest of the ABBA music served as a soundtrack, but wasn't really relevant to the plot.

If the adaptation is set in the current day, I don't think her ABBA obsession would have to be utilized. It could be any cheesy pop group to which she feels a personal connection that would be considered currently outdated (though not as well known in the US, Steps would serve nicely as a substitute, having significant Australian popularity in the mid-90s). Or this particular aspect of her character could be highlighted in other pop culture references. ABBA really isn't necessary to the character or the story. It was just a clever device for the time the film was produced.

I do think this would be a difficult show to produce onstage. Those who aren't familiar with it could easily get the wrong idea that it is some sort of romantic comedy fluff piece and may be put off by its somber moments and overall poignancy.

I refuse to believe that this is real. Nothing could improve this film (and nobody would even come close to giving the performance Toni Collette gives)

Alas, Henry, if true, this won't be the first time the lure of easy money resulted in an unnecessary production.

Well put, Matt, but I fear that if you take ABBA away, it won't really be MURIEL'S WEDDING any more. IMO, it's the sheer, almost idiotic exuberance of ABBA songs that define Muriel/Mariel's character. (I would quibble a bit and say the use of "Fernando" and "I Do! I Do! I Do!" in the film also serve to advance the plot.)

(But as for people being misled, you are so right: I insisted my sister see the film and she immediately called me, shouting, "I THOUGHT YOU SAID IT WAS A COMEDY!")
