As far as a Broadway composer who might deserve it now Maury Yeston or Tim Rice as a lyricist .

Some who I could see earning the honor down the line Robert Lopez, David Yazbeck, Jeanine Tesori, Tom Kitt & Brian Yorkey, William Finn, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Adam Guettel, Michael John LaChiusa, Ahrens and Flaherty, and Jason Robert Brown. Though some of those are hard to tell based on a limited body of work.

I'm also really impressed and excited by the youngest generation of composers (Pasek & Paul, Kerrigan & Lowdermilk, Joe Iconis, Ryan Scott Oliver) Who knows? Maybe 50 years down the line they'll be sitting up there next to President North West. I kid, I kid!!!

Pop music: (I think they will go with a woman in 2014) so many possibilities Linda Ronstadt, Carole King, Bonnie Raitt, and Emmylou Harris come to mind.

Classical music: Kathleen Battle or Esa-Pekka Salonen (although he is only 55 so he still has a lot work ahead of him)

Acting: (since it went to a woman in 2013, they will probably go with a man in 2014) Al Pacino, Dick Van Dyke, Harrison Ford or Christopher Plummer.

Dance: Peter Martins or Lar Lubovitch

Wild card: I'd go with Philip Glass or John Guare

Joni Mitchell
Tommy Tune
Mary Tyler Moore
Dick Van Dyke
Woody Allen (but I don't think he'd show up, so that's that)
Doris Day (see above)
Albert Finney
Francis Ford Coppola
Mickey Rooney

Future honorees that I think aren't old enough yet, but are already worthy:

Ken Burns
Harvey Fierstein
Jodie Foster
Susan Stroman
Denzel Washington

Coppola is long overdue for this kind of thing. He still hasn't gotten the AFI Lifetime thing either, while others of significantly less importance (Eastwood, Hanks, etc.) have.

As much as I adore van Dyke, he's done a couple Broadway shows, a handful of forgettable movies (Marry Poppins excepted, of course) and one hit TV series. Is that enough? Pacino, Mitchell, Channing, Glass, Coppola and Lubovitch are all good choices. And I might throw James Levine into the mix.

Oh good call on Coppola. I knew I was missing someone of that ilk from that era.

Also, I'd add Tom Hanks to besty's list of too young but eventually. Only a matter of time there. He's a lock, and probably the first of his generation eventually.

Words don't deserve that kind of malarkey. They're innocent, neutral, precise, standing for this, describing that, meaning the other, so if you look after them you can build bridges across incomprehension and chaos. But when they get their corners knocked off, they're no good anymore…I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.

I second Faye Dunaway. And third Doris Day - but she turned them down already. If it's her fear of flying, someone should drive her.

I just cannot believe Betty White hasn't been honored yet. She's probably the most deserving person I can think of.

Guy wise: Dick Van Dyke, Alan Menken, Burt Bacharach, Woody Allen, Gene Hackman, Al Pacino, Neil Young, Philip Glass, Stephen Schwartz, & George Strait are all great suggestions. What about Jerry Lewis, Mickey Rooney, Robin Williams, Ron Howard, Bob Newhart, Carl Reiner, Randy Newman, Christopher Plummer, Tommy Tune, George C. Wolfe & Alan Alda?

Carol Channing, Carol Channing, and Carol Channing many times over. She has brought so much joy and laughter to audiences for the past 70 years and has NEVER let her audiences down. It would be a real crime to overlook her again. BTW, hasn't Betty White already been honored?

Some really great suggestions have been made! And I think the consensus is they need to hurry up and honor Carol Channing! I was thinking about Valerie Harper and Marlo Thomas yesterday. Are either of them worthy? Marlo maybe more for her charity work and since it's an award for artistry she may not be as deserving but I've always been a fan.

With the Cabaret revival going up I could see that maybe factoring into Liza being chosen next year. They would definitely love having Michelle Williams up there singing Cabaret.

I'd love to see Megan Hilty sing Maybe This Time, Stephanie J Block sing But the World Goes Round, Jessie Mueller sing City Lights, Patina Miller sing Don't Smoke in Bed, Chita dance a bit to Stepping Out, Alan Cumming do something for her creepy version of Losing My Mind (which I hate but they're buds and he fits the song), her friend Sam Harris sing New York New York with a choir. Of course someone would have to do Liza with a Z... maybe a drag queen...

Edit: If anyone from the Kennedy Center sees this I'm free just PM me. LOL Updated On: 1/7/14 at 01:49 PM

SHELDON HARNICK.
Shocked he's never been honored.
A living legend. Highly respected by everyone in theater and still creating to this day. I'd say that's a no-brainer. And just think of the musical numbers they could do!

Acting: Robert Duvall, Al Pacino, Olivia de Havilland, Glenn Close, Maggie Smith, Mickey Rooney, Bob Newhart, Alan Alda, Rosemary Harris
Music: James Levine (Another one they need to hurry for), I would say Kathleen Battle but I think being a prima donna bi@ch for most of your career should take you out of the running for this award.
Directing: Coppola.
