In the link are the top ten choices of critics from the New York Times, Time, The Hollywood Reporter, Time Out New York, New York Magazine, and my own. (I'll add more lists as more are published.) The Glass Menagerie and Twelfth Night are on nearly every list, but not all of them; neither make Time's list. Top 10 Lists of Top 10 Theater 2013
I've added Adam Green's list from Vogue, who adds a note at the end: "I would have included the musical Hands on a Hardbody on this list, but the fact that my sister wrote the lyrics and cowrote the music (with Phish front man Trey Anastasio) would have made it suspect.” (That, and that nobody else puts it on their list)
Yes, there are hundreds of Tony voters, and a handful of folks that put out these lists....but the voters were wrong. Lists don't prove anything. Those are just opinions, too.
Personally, I didn't think either show was spectacular, but enjoyed them both. This isn't the first time that people disagreed with the Tony results, it certainly won't be the last.
BTW.....The Tonys screwed up. No apostrophe. Unless your sentence read something like: Tony's mother screwed up. (Apostrophe abuse is a pet peeve of mine.)
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
I've added the top 10 list from Mark Kennedy of the Associated Press -- the ONLY critic so far to include 2013 Best Musical Tony Winner Kinky Boots....and the only one to include The Sound of Music!
I now have 9 top 10 lists. Only one to go -- I assume it'll be either the Daily News or the New York Post, neither of which have posted their lists yet.
I've added Matt Windman of AM New York, who, like most of the other critics, includes Twelfth Night and Fun Home, and excludes Kinky Boots. But, unlike his colleagues, he does not mention The Glass Menagerie.
Ok, one more: USA Toda, which is a bit eccentric -- instead of a top 10 form to their list, it's more like Tony Award categories.. Best Book Musical, Best Musical Review, .Best vehicle, "Actor most palpably pleased with his own performances"
I've added the top 10 list from the Daily News. That makes 12 critics' top 10 lists. Almost all chose Twelfth Night, followed by The Glass Menagerie. The rest of the most chosen: : Here Lies Love (8 of the 12 critics chose this), Matilda (6 ), Pippin (6), Fun Home (5). The Flick (5), Buyer and Cellar (5), After Midnight (4) and Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812 (4)
One more just added to the list, Elizabeth Vincentelli of the Post. Her list includes both Twelfth Night and Here Lies Love, but not Glass Menagerie. Of the 10 shows most often picked by these 13 critics, half were/are on Broadway, half Off-Broadway.
