Talkin' Broadway: "That it’s completely meaningless and utterly emotion-free strangely doesn’t matter; the top-flight talent of every person involved, both onstage and off, ensures that this evening delights despite not raising the temperature beyond a bare simmer [...] But as long as the band and Carlyle continue to adhere to their exacting, sky-high standards and keep the brass bursting the way it is now, there’s no reason that After Midnight, one-dimensional though it so often feels, can’t — and shouldn’t — run forever"

Syncopated or synchronized; scatting, swinging or serenading; in white satin or black silk, the more than three dozen supremely talented entertainers of “After Midnight” – singers, dancers and musicians – thrill with an astonishing 27 musical numbers over 90 intermission-less minutes....
There are two ways, however, in which Dule Hill’s use of Langston Hughes’ poetry strikes me as a missed opportunity.

The reviewer from the NY Post Elizabeth Vincetelli is a complete idiot. She writes that Warren Carlysle is not the most imaginative choreographer.....well she is entitled to her opinion of course but the ography in this show is beyond inventive and creative...did she see his work on On Your Toes? Her comment got me really angry. BTW- she gave Evita a rave last season, the show that made no sense- And I detested it. There you go. And Warren-I LOVE your work- keep it going. Hope you get your Tony this year.

My dear Evic, did you NOT read the entire review? It was glowingly positive. She raves about the choreo and the show.. I agree with you btw, that the choreo was waaaay inventive...maybe she was referring to some of his other shows. All in all, a great review from the ****ty, who cares? NY Post

After Midnight revives the golden era of Harlem jazz and it's most famous venue, the Cotton Club, with a broadway musical review. Do they succeed in bringing uptown to midtown or is it not worth staying up late for? Find out in our full review!

NY Times (Isherwood) is positive:

"The band takes the last bow in “After Midnight,” the sparkling new jazz revue that opened at the Brooks Atkinson Theater on Sunday night. This may be unusual for Broadway, where the players are normally in the pit — and the music often sounds as if it could have been piped in from Hong Kong — but it’s entirely as it should be.

I mean no disrespect to the superabundance of talented performers in this jubilant show when I say that they are all playing second fiddle, if you will, to the main attraction. This would be the 16 musicians called the Jazz at Lincoln Center All-Stars, stacked in a bandstand at the back of the stage for much of the evening, rollicking through the music of Duke Ellington and Harold Arlen and others with a verve that almost captivates the eye as much as it does the ear. It will be a long time before Broadway hosts music making this hot, sweet and altogether glorious again."

I adored this show, but I wouldn't say that any of the reviews are particularly unfair. I did wonder what it would have been like had the creators attempted to inject some more historical context -- especially of the African American experience -- but this show is largely about the feel inside the Cotton Club, not the world outside. I AM puzzled by the one review which singled out the costume designs as tacky. I rarely feel the need to comment on the costume design of a show, but I thought After Midnight's costumes were just gorgeous and injected with a winning dose of color and whimsy.

It just boggles my mind how negative people can be all the time about shows no matter how good they ACTUALLY are. I'm all about having an opinion. But I notice ALOT of the same people posting on the boards so negatively. If all these shows are so bad, how about writing the perfect show and showing us how they should be.

Oh, please. There is no show (or anthing, for that matter) that will ever have 100% of the people on its side.

I hate Rent and Curtains; the very large majority of theater goers did not. I loved some shows that couldn't find an audience: Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson and The Scottsboro Boys spring to mind. I've also loved some blockbusters and everything in between.

SO WHAT? I find it amusing that in a thread that is mostly hugely positive, you still find it apropos to talk negativity.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Is Broadwaystar2 Fantasia's personal assistant? Relax, hon. The reviews range from raves to very positive. Only a handful are mixed and certainly none are outright negative reviews. I'd say the show has been very well received. I absolutely LOVED After Midnight but that doesn't mean it's a perfect show or that it will appeal to everyone. Relax. Breathe.

I think the cost of running the show would be low and the set would not need too much alterations for the tour. This and the fact they can have BIG NAME singers and the greedy PRODUCERS can sell it in every market makes it an easy tony winner.

I don't think the show is really cheap to run -- with 25 in the cast and 17 in the band and a star salary or two. Not a lot of physical production costs compared to most musicals. But it's not "Rock of Ages" either.

Yeah, I have a hard time believing it's a cheap show to run. It's not only the size of the cast and orchestra, but the caliber of those dancers and, especially, musicians. I could be wrong, but I doubt they're all getting the Equity minimum. So, Fantasia and the cast performed on the Today show today. Fantasia sounded great, the band was red hot and the ensemble danced very well, but the whole thing looked a bit croweded and messy on that limited Today show outdoor set. It reminded me of how beautifully and fluidly the production is staged at the actual theatre. I don't think Carlyle (and the designers) get enough credit for how well they've staged and designed transitions between (and, sometimes, within) the 25+ songs in the production -- it's just seamless.

I saw this over the weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it. Has there been any mention of a cast recording? I was thinking of other people I'd like to see as special guest stars.

I saw After Midnight the other day and really enjoyed it, but I liked the show better last year at City Center as Cotton Club Parade. The lovely huge stage at City Center gave the production room to breathe. The musicians were comfortably arrayed there, and the choreography seemed more beautiful. But the cast made the move to the Brooks Atkinson largely intact, and the demonstration of talent on the stage, both last year and currently, is mind-boggling. I recommend seeing After MIdnight for 90-minutes of escapism in the best sense.
