"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)
I cannot wait to read the book. Berger will have a unique perspective on what went on behind-the-scenes, and to an extent, an unbiased one.
It's been THREE YEARS since the show started previews. Hard to believe. For many reasons.
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Oh wow. Thank you so much for posting! God that article alone had lots of information I knew nothing about. I can't even imagine how much other dirt this book is going to have. This was my favorite part...
His doubts grew during technical rehearsals, which moved at a snail’s pace. It took days to create what would amount to a few minutes of stage time. And the multimillion-dollar sets seemed to Berger to be, well, dangerous. All the while, the budget grew. Taymor wanted to drape the theater in a spiderweb, and the production designer created a giant steel ring to rise to the top of the theater and release a net over the audience. It was installed at the Foxwoods. But one day Berger looked up and saw it was no longer there. “Where’s the thingy?” he asked. “They took it down,” a production manager replied. “The whole thing was going to get in the way of the cables . . . The flying wouldn’t have worked with that thing hanging there.” Berger was stunned. “A ring of money $1 million in diameter” had been “hauled away to some big dump.”
I'm going to be like kid on Christmas morning when this book is on my doorstep.
"There’s nothing quite like the power and the passion of Broadway music. "
"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.”
~ Muhammad Ali
I can't see it ever recouping. Remember before it opened, it was written that in order to break even, the show would have to run for 7 years with every single seat sold for every performance at full price, no discounts. And that was before they rebooted it, I believe.
Everytime I read about this show I get sick to my stomach. And why is there no mention of Daniel Curry in the article? I know the book was written before that accident.... but surprised it wasn't brought up in the article
QUOTE: "The Verdict: Again, the total upfront cost of the show was $65 million. At the weekly profit rate above, it will take ($65,000,000) / ($313,489.80 a week) = 207.3 weeks = about 4 years before the show even begins to make up its initial investment."
and despite my best attempts to bring it down — “Spider-Man” is still running on Broadway
I have such an issue with that statement from Riedel, just goes to prove the man really is a nasty little c u n t
Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist.
Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino.
This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more.

"Julie Taymor unsurprising gets pushed under a bus."
Julie Taymor refused to look in either direction when crossing the street and stepped right in front of that bus of her own volition. Nobody had to give her a push to let that accident occur.
""and despite my best attempts to bring it down — “Spider-Man” is still running on Broadway ""
If anything tells you how narcisstic and stupid a person is this is it. To think it, is bad enough, but to actually put it in print, is ca-razy. this is the most vile and unprofessional thing i think a "journalist" can say. He should be fired on the spot for that.
Whether you liked the show or not, and i did, they took risks, took chances. tried to modernize the musical, tried to bring something new to broadway instead of the gazillionth revival of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, another movie made into a show or another jukebox He on the other hand just sits on the sidelines critizing and self abusing himself while rewatching his stella SMASH appearances.
