I haven't heard any further news, but I hope it is happening! I was never crazy about the other one, but I love love the music. Maybe if the movie comes out it will inspire a revival!
The original was pretty great with the exception of the cuts to Meek Shall Inherit and the new ending. But I wouldn't mind a new film if it included the entire Meek Shall Inherent sequence, Now, Closed for Renovation Call Back in the Morning and Don't Feed the Plants. Mushnik and Son never really did much for me (even when I played Mushnik) and I actually prefer Some Fun Now over Ya Never Know. And I really love Mean Green Mother. I just wasn't happy about what followed the song in the film release.

Honestly, I think the director's cut release of the film would be the perfect film adaptation if someone made judicious cuts to the Audrey II rampage during the finale sequence and reinstated the Meek Shall Inherit dream sequence (weird as it is).
"...everyone finally shut up, and the audience could enjoy the beginning of the Anatevka Pogram in peace."
The original movie is pretty well-made, but I hate the alternate ending, and I hate having to listen to Miss Squeaky's voice. Still, I don't know if those are good enough reasons to make a new one.

That's true, I forgot about the cuts to "The Meek Shall Inherit." It annoys me because it's such a great song. But at least we have the full version on the soundtrack.
I like the ending, though. I hate the stage version's ending.
I think the cuts in Meek aren't on the soundtrack, which is why I forget about them. I mostly think that the movie is perfect the way it is and the cast is terrific. Although I don't even remember the rumors about this film being re-made, if they did it Jake Gyllenhaal would obviously be terrific for it. The movie's ending made sense for the time, I don't mind that it was changed.
"Contentment, it seems, simply happens. It appears accompanied by no bravos and no tears."
I love the "Meek" dream sequence, but I also like the nightmarish, chaotic condensation of all Seymour's agent encounters into a single verse. It wouldn't be as dynamic onstage, but it's the sort of thing you can do on film better than live.
I've always imagined a version filmed in my run-down hometown, on location.
But as everyone says, with the DC ending the original is perfect (despite the score cuts). Some of the best star casting where the people actually fit.
I think this would be a great show for a live tv broadcast, especially if it aired around Halloween. I had hoped Fox would put Grease in the fall because A. it would give it a kind of "back to school" vibe and B. it would mean Little Shop would be a prime follow up. I'm pretty disappointed Grease is slated for January. It's not enough time between NBS's broadcast. Late summer early fall would have been the smarter move in my opinion. I worry about the public becoming fatigued of them
