Hi Broadway World,

I need some ideas for a competition large group musical.

Here are the specs:

- up to 16 students. Boys and girls.
- 6 minutes max
- song should tell a story
- strong characterization
- song shod build to a big finish
-dancing is great
-staging is could work too
-something newer would be great
-classic is ok too
- no costumes. Characters must come from acting.
- props are ok

In the past 3 years I have won competitions with large groups numbers like the following:

- We're in the money
- Toldedo Surprise
- Step in Time

Thank you for your help!!

"In" from Carrie is great for what your looking for. "Skid Row" from Little Shop, "There You Are" from Drood, "Freak Flag" from Shrek, "When You're An Addams" from The Addams Family, "Run Freedom Run" from Urinetown, "What Is This Feeling?" from Wicked, and "Transylvania Mania" from Young Frankenstein would be great as well. I personally would go with in because the song has great characterization, a great conflict, and has room for some choreography. Hope I could help! Good luck :)

"Magic to Do" from Pippin, "Can't Help Falling in Love" from All Shook Up, "You Can't Stop the Beat" from Hairspray, "On Our Way" from Imaginocean, "Once and For All" from Newises, "Oh The Things You Can Think" from Seussical, "Story of my Life" from Shrek, and "Welcome to Wonderland" from Wonderland are all songs that come to mind, including the ones mentioned above. :) That's a pretty wide range of different types of songs, depending in which direction you want to go with it.

Sounds like you're from Florida State Thespians District 5! Is this someone from Boone High School? Or are you just using their 3 large groups as examples?

Definitely has more guys than girls, but "Tonight" from West Side has good character options, "Footloose", "I Got You" from Bring It On, "Revolting Children" from Matilda, or "Stick to the Status Quo" from High School Musical.

I'll add "On My Way" from Violet. Not a dancing song, but it's great.

"I hope I get it" from A CHORUS LINE.
Some people can get a thrill, knitting sweaters and sitting still. That's okay for some people, who don't know they're alive!
