I am very sad to hear this. Actors are humans and occasionally miss shows, I understand. They also deserve vacations as any other hard worker. I spent money on premium seats for August 20 to treat my daughter before she goes away to school. This is disappointing. First Orion, now Andrea. Do you know if the box office has a policy to exchange tickets for a later date since Andrea Martin is an award winner and all. If not, can I safely assume that the producers would not have other major roles arrange for vacations during the same time?
BTW - I met Andrea Martin at the stage door when she did Exit the King. She was so lovely to everyone and spent so much time with the fans. There were some theater students in the group and she took the time to answer their questions.
Chris, the playbill doesn't have any of the ensemble listed above the title for PIPPIN, so I imagine they aren't required to inform anyone. But they apparently have Andrea, assuming the information various people have been reporting here is right.
Words don't deserve that kind of malarkey. They're innocent, neutral, precise, standing for this, describing that, meaning the other, so if you look after them you can build bridges across incomprehension and chaos. But when they get their corners knocked off, they're no good anymore…I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.
Has anyone but the OP actually verified this is even true? (I'm not saying it isn't, mind you.)
It can't hurt to ask about an exchange, but it is unlikely that you will get it. I can understand being disappointed, but the show is really wonderful, that I'm sure you won't feel you've missed anything. (Is it really going to be Tovah? I'd love to see that!)
As far as others being out...no guarantee on that either. They can't very well tell the rest of the cast that no other vacations will be granted during the entire month. And of course, illness or injury can also come into play. For example, I can't see Terrence Mann and Charlotte D'Amboise not being granted vacation together.
I say, just go and enjoy the show. If its REALLY any good (and I think it is) it will be wonderful even with replacements and understudies.

Well I know nothing about Martin's health issues, but if that's true, I wish her nothing but good luck and a speedy recovery.
But for the people who are complaining that she's taking so much time off immediately post-Tonys, am I the only one who assumed this time off was planned in her initial contract, before opening and before the Tonys?
When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain.

To be fair, most people were defending her absence -- regardless of a reason.
Are you just throwing breast cancer as a "for example" or is this fact? And, if she hasn't released a press release about it, it's pretty bold of you to do so. She has a right to privacy.

Someone else mentioned this a few pages back: If she's taking the month off, I highly doubt she is going to leave permanently in September, and therefore probably renewed. That is a good thing and will allow more people to see her performance in the future.
Patash -- please remove that post, its the way rumors get started. You have no right to throw that out there. Over the line by a country mile.
There were lots of other appropriate ways to make your point.

I would think that a performer would love to do stagedoor. Whenever I finish a show I love going out in the lobby and having people tell me how good I was :P
I also saw no mention of this on the Telecharge website so I called them and was told that Martin has no upcoming vacations. Hopefully something more official will be made public soon.
Maybe she has a prior film or TV obligation. Stars aren't usually given a month off from a Broadway show this soon after opening unless it's pre-arranged or an emergency (and private) situation.
We don't know the reason, and it's none of our business.
... and despite your point, your post was reprehensible, Patash.

Weep for me. I have a ticket to the first performance that Andrea M will be out. I specifically booked this trip to see her performance and have avoided learning what her special trick (?) is. also, on this trip I wanted to see billy magnussen (gone already) as well as Nathan Lane before he closes and Bertie Carvel before he leaves in sept. Can't win them all. Still hoping for the last two. fingers crossed.
otoh can't wait to see Patina and all the others, Julie white and all the others. still looking forward to my trip.
It might not even be true. Another poster said the ticketing agency has no such information.
Nate: many performers do, but its not part of the job. And it gets old quick. These people do it 8 shows a week, for months on end. A billion years ago I worked for a children's theater. Signing autographs was a required part of the job. At first, it was fun, and ego-filling. But it didn't take long before it was a chore, and the least favorite part of my job. Most of my fellow actors agreed. We were tired, hungry and often still had another performance or two or three ahead of us. We did four shows a day, four days a week.
I'm sure that's a big reason that I have little interest IN stage dooring at all, and I totally understand any actor that chooses not to --be it occasionally or always.

@dramamama611, That's understandable. It should always be something the performers want to do instead of needing to do. I actually have opening night tonight, we are doing 21 shows in a 3 week period and I have a very physically exhausting part. I already know I'm going to want to get the hell out of that theater and soak in my tub for hours after the show lol.
TASIA COMIN' BACK TO BROAD-WAAAY YA'LL! (And taking two weeks off after opening night.)
And if I were a performer on Broadway, I wouldn't stage door. When I occasionally have performed, I'm exhausted, cranky, self-concious, and need my space for a half-hour or so. I wouldn't want a bunch of obnoxious self-entitled teenagers and old ladies gathering around me, clamoring for an autograph, a picture, and a new supposed friendship.
Give Andrea a break!!! She has taken one day off (that I am aware of)since the show began (including previews). She has been very generous with her time both at the stage door and at various events through out the city. If she decides not to stage door (usually on 2 show day) that is her choice. But she has been nothing but a true professional the whole time. There is no reason to be upset because she wants to take a break. Besides it has not even been confirmed she is out the whole month. And if it is true good for her, I look forward to her returning in September, Fresh and ready for another 6 month run.
I wonder if it has anything to do with the actor that holds her being injured and out all month. I saw it again on 7/31 and the understudy and she were having minor adjustments and movements that she didn't have with (I think) Eric that was injured.
Ummm so someone has yet to verify if she will be out all of August... The OP posted that they saw it on Telecharge, but nowhere on Telecharge does it say she will be out...
