This morning on "Live with Kelly and Michael," Denzel Washington confirmed his involvement in a revival of "A Raisin in the Sun." He said that Diahann Caroll will also star. He said that they're planning on beginning previews in March!
Looking forward to Diahann Caroll making her return to the stage after 30 years. Would rather it be in a different play. Denzel is just not right for the role in my opinion. Even when he was younger. I hope I am proven wrong because it is such a beautiful play

Are we really supposed to believe that Washington has a sister 38 YEARS younger than him? And that 78 year old Diahann Carroll gave birth to BOTH of them? Beneatha is college age, so she really can't be much older than 20 or so.
Tell me he's just producing or directing this production.
Not a play that is in need of revival, IMO.
"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.”
~ Muhammad Ali
When you're Denzel you kind of just get to do whatever you want, as others have said before, it's such a shame that he's not turning that power into a way to help new playwrights of color, rather than revive this play (and honestly, I think there's more interesting playwrights out there than Hansberry, blasphemy, I know). Oh well, if rumors about the supporting cast are true (Carroll, Okonedo, Rose), it'll be somewhat more exciting.
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
Scott Rudin is a big producer! Period! He has money and will bring in money! Period! So in his comment in the link above, I basically can say it's all about money. You have a big star people want to see...in anything...$$$$ from the business stand-point, it is pure genius, but artistically it can be a stretch...but theater is all about disbelief right...stretching your imagination....but here you're going to say "Grandpa" when you see Denzel, or he will be so good...age never becomes a factor.
Yes, but again ucageg, it's all about making money. And the potential it has to make money. So age really does not matter...Rudin is right in a way, he has a great actor who wants to play a great role...period..if money is thrown at the production and money is coming in, who cares, right? It's still a business.
Denzel should take some personal responsibility and ask himself if, no matter how legendary the role is, if he should really play it. But money is money, so that trumps sanity.
On a related note, why is Kenny Leon apparently the only black director capable of bringing the black experience to the Broadway stage?
