CATS Audition?

I'm 17, and my local cities theatre is holding auditions for the musical Cats. I am a baritone with a very low range. I'm a decent singer, but nothing fantastic.

I'm interested in the character of Rum Tum Tugger. Since he is an elvis/rockstar'esque character, I was thinking of auditioning with a song that matches that.

So far, I've considered Song of The King - Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and If I were A Rich Man - Fiddler on The Roof.

What do you think of these suggestions? Got any more?

Thanks! :)

For Rum Tum Tugger, I think Beauty School Dropout would be a good choice. That's not a song that I recommend often but I feel that the style is similar to the songs Tugger sings in CATS - his title song and MISTER MISTOFFELEES - and you can do your best to make it your own. It's difficult to find another song that matches the vocal inflections used by the actors who made Tugger famous.

I've been involved in a few productions of CATS. Musically, it is very difficult for performers when they add in the choreography. I had one director who used a slight variation on the original Broadway choreography and my body has never hurt more. But it's an amazing show to experience and you will grow so much as a performer given the chance to be in it and see the inside workings of such a misunderstood piece. Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Also check out some of the Narrator's songs from the Fantasticks
Let me be your star, now wouldn't that be lovely?

For some reason my mind went to Sweet Transvestite from Rocky Horror- at least in comparison to John Partridge's version of Tugger.

I would recommend things like I'm Alive from Next To Normal, Goodbye from Catch Me If You Can (Live In Living Color is too much of a production-dependent number though it fits Tugger's character) and Magic To Do from Pippin
