I work at a children's theatre and I do a show with Special Needs individuals. We did "Once Upon a Mattress"...a shortened version...and I was the minstrel. It worked very well with myself being a narrator type character. What other shows have a similar character.

I can think of Pippin and Pacific Overtures.

You know what would be good, and no one has brought it up:

Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat.

Just putting that out there.

This is a stretch, but the characters of Jersey Boys act as narrators (each member of the Four Seasons) at different points in the show.

I saw a community production of "Treasure Island" about 4 years ago and I remember that the leading male (who's name has slipped my mind over the years) at several times had long monologues explaining everything going on, so I guess he could be considered a narrator.

If you're not limiting it to a single character ...

The chorus in Sweeney Todd, the chorus (trio) in Little Shop of Horrors.

All of the characters in Ragtime narrate their own lives.

And of course, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Nobody's mentioned that one yet.

In TOMMY, tommy acts as a narrator in the first act, Sind there are also some narartor type songs in the second act like Sally Simpson.

Candide

In City of Angels and Kiss of the Spiderwoman, the stories within the story are narrated by Stine and Molina.

Tevye definitely narrates the opening scene, then steps into the story. He does his monologues throughout the story to "God," but I don't think he ever returns to narration after the opening number (Tradition).

Still, he counts.

Huck in Big River goes in and out of narrating and slipping into his own story. He does it throughout the show.
