Zingy little book report there, newintown, but it reads like somebody who hasn't actually read the Voice in a decade and a half. In fact, your criticism is exactly what the conglomerate that bought the Voice ages ago told the stalwarts they fired and proceeded to run the paper into the ground.

Feingold is the only reason I read the Village Voice. Dead to me.

What would Feingold write for the Times? "Most of your advertising base is artisitcally bankrupt and priced so out of the reach of most New Yorkers that it doesn't even deserve attention?" I just don't see the fit, and I write this as somebody who adores what Feingold writes.

"Dear astonishingly supportive friends and colleagues: I thought when it started that this would be the darkest day of my life, but thanks to you it has turned out to be the happiest and most exhilarating. I am literally exhausted from trying to keep up with all the messages of sympathy, love and support. The VV has terminated my contract as a staff writer as of Tuesday, but it has treated me gently. I am now in the process of crunching numbers on what they have said is a very generous severance offer, and I will have legal advice and Union support while working it out with them. In addition, they have proposed that, once the severance matter is settled, I should resume work for them as a freelancer and continue to run the Obies. I am pondering whether this would be feasible, and will discuss its terms with them once other matters are settled. In the meantime I feel free, I feel loved, and I feel that countless possibilities are now open to me. The world has ended but I'm still here and starting over again. And I owe this feeling in large part to the way all of you have reacted to my situation. I have never felt so embraced in my life, and I bless you all for it.

Posted: 5/18/13 at 12:55pmGlad to hear they're being respectful. I made up that quote, BorstalBoy, trying to imagine how this man might talk about Broadway given what he has written about it in the alt weekly. Not to say I wouldn't love for him to end up someplace I could read him regularly.

Posted: 5/19/13 at 4:49pmI confess that it's been some time since I read the Voice regularly, but on the occasions when I have picked it up in recent years, I haven't noticed an improved relevance. However, if anyone wanted to offer proof that the rag jettisoned its antique politics, I'd be happy to consider reevaluating.
