Gender bending. Is it possible?

Hi everyone. The theater program I do during the summer is putting on a production of The Little Mermaid JR. this summer. It will be my last show with the program, and I've always wanted to play a villain, but never have. What are the odds do you think that Ursula in that show could be played by a male? I definitely have the vocal range for it, and the keys of songs are easily adjusted if it becomes an issue. I'm just wondering, from those who know the show, if the actual part would still make sense if played by a man. In other words, could it work kind of like Edna does in Hairspray?

Of course Ursala can be played by a man.

BUT:
Will the taking of a major (and fun) female role by a man cause the women in the company to be pissed off? I think I would be.

I think it would work well.
You could do it two ways though, either keep the role female and play it Hairspray style (like you said) or you could easily name change and make it a male character, just a thought.
