Title says it all! A close friend of mine is in a bind and in search of a comedic soprano song. She is a lovely ingénue type. Think "Wheres My Other Shoe" from She Loves Me. Thanks in advance fellow theatre lovers!

I'll take the wind and soar.

"Getting Married Today" pretty well leaps to mind.

"Somebody" from CELEBRATION could be fun if she'd like something a little less heard.

If she's a strong soprano, how about "Glitter and be gay"?

Thanks for the suggestions so far!

allthatjazz- She is certainly a strong enough soprano for the song, but its perhaps a bit overdone.

I like the suggestion of "Somebody."

I was thinking that although it's a duet, with some logical adjustments, "Carried Away" from ON THE TOWN could work well for an audition.

"Old Maid" from 110 in the Shade is kind of comedic... although sad

If she's not opposed to another song from She Loves Me, I adore "Vanilla Ice Cream."

Jimmy, what are you doing here in the middle of the night? It's almost 9 PM!

I dont remember how it's keyed, but "I Was the Most Beautiful Blossom" from OF THEE I SING. It's Gershwin. It's hysterical. Who could ask for anything more?

What about "I Cain't Say NO"

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

What about "Never", from "On the Twentieth Century". Or if she's a really proficient soprano, an operetta piece could work, like Adele's laughing song (Mein Herr Marquis) from Die Fledermaus, "Poor wandering one" from "Pirates of Penzance" or Victor Herbert's charming gem, "Art is calling for me".

I would steer clear of "The Girl in 14-G"...which many girls sing as a comedic song.

I just don't think it ever works with just a piano and the girl standing there singing.

See if you can find Barbara Cook's "The Ingenue" - an original song lamenting the plight of the young soprano from her "It's Better With A Band" album.

"When I was three they said to me
The stage would be my medium
But ingenues must pay their dues with unrelenting tedium..."

"What- and quit show business?" - the guy shoveling elephant shit at the circus.

There's a song that is a little obscure and she'd have to make some adjustments for it to work as a solo, called "Welcome to Kindergarten Mrs. Johnson" from A... My Name is Alice. Most people won't know it and it's funny-- at least, it has potential to be funny.

Is she needing this song for an audition? If not, disregard everything I'm about to say.

If so, don't do "Getting Married Today". Don't do "The Girl in 14G". Don't do "Vanilla Ice Cream". Don't do "Glitter and Be Gay". Don't do "Popular" (although I think that might have been a joke... or at least I hope so).

Everything else people have mentioned are contenders.

"The Coconut Girl" from The Girl Who Came to Supper is long, but it's a virtuoso piece where one can really show off one's comedic abilities.

"How do you Solve a Problem Like Maria," from "The Sound of Music," is light-hearted and provides comedic opportunities. Although intended as a multi-singer conversation, it would work perfectly well as a soliloquy.

You alone can make my song take flight.
