I was wondering if anyone knows of actors/actresses who list bible verses in their Playbill bios, and if so, which specific verses? I've noticed that many do, and I think it's interesting!

Thanks!

Yes, let's name and shame them.

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

"If food you're cooking falls on the floor, you have 5 seconds to pick it up if you still want to serve it". Wait...that's not from the bible, is it?

I, on the other hand, love when I see a Bible verse in Playbill Bios. :) I admire actors who believe in Him and let it be known to the world by sharing a favorite verse that they feel best represents themselves or their experience in their show. Thanks, greengirl11 for asking this question! Ya got me searching Playbill Vault for more! :)

I like them, but I can't remember any of the specific ones off the top of my head. Bible verses in Playbills? Probably some of the Psalms about singing and dancing show up a lot!

Michael Cerveris

"Then he went up from there to Bethel; and as he was going up the road, some youths came from the city and mocked him, and said to him, “Go up, you baldhead! Go up, you baldhead!” So he turned around and looked at them, and pronounced a curse on them in the name of the LORD. And two female bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the youths.' 2 Kings 2:23-24

If I recall correctly, Tony Yazbeck's was "Man shall not lie with man as with a woman unless it's me and findingnamo." J/K! Not Really.

Very sweet.

Surprised you didn't go with Jeremy Piven's bible verse, Joe.

Leviticus 11:12 - "Whatsoever hath no fins nor scales in the waters, that shall be an abomination unto you."

Words don't deserve that kind of malarkey. They're innocent, neutral, precise, standing for this, describing that, meaning the other, so if you look after them you can build bridges across incomprehension and chaos. But when they get their corners knocked off, they're no good anymore…I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.

I admire the performers who put verse references in their bios, even when faith is not a a popular thing in theatre. Two comon verse seem to be Phil 4:13 and Jer. 29:11. One looked up after seeing it in my Playbill was Isaiah 26:3 ("You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.")

Isn't there something about not making a show of your faith??

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

"When you pray, don't be like the hypocrites who love to pray publicly on street corners and in the synagogues where everyone can see them. I tell you the truth, that is all the reward they will ever get." -Matthew 6:5

I think that's Tim Tebow's favorite!
