With Matt and Trey now doing their own thing with their new production studio. Could there be new talks about a BOM movie for real this time? I know earlier there were just rumors, but now that the two have no limitations, and can do basically what ever they want. Could this be a possibility?!

Matt and Trey have both confirmed that the movie will indeed happen, it just won't be for several years. There was even a video posted here yesterday of Josh Gad saying the same thing.

I really hope it's animated. I feel like the live action medium would not do the material any justice on film.

I hope Josh Gad is not involved with the film. I found his portrayal way over the top and two dimensional. Ben Platt is so much better in the Chicago cast. Actually, for the most part, I prefer the Chicago cast. I didn't really fall in love with this show until I saw them do it.

I feel like it would be a fairly logical choice to animate the film, and an even more logical choice to do the animation in the South Park Studio style. More traditional Disney or Bluth style animation would be pretty, yes, but it's not adding anything to the piece's style. On the other hand, the South Park style, with its fusion of bizarre comedy, social commentary and musical homage, literally IS the Book of Mormon.

I think the movie would most likely be live action, I can't see Matt and Trey animating it like South Park, they'll want BoM to stand up on its own.

I don't know if the show's stage style would WORK onscreen in live action. It's written in even broader strokes than South Park is, and a ton of the humor is based on old-fashioned stage conventions- flats and drops, silly costumes, etc.

Unless this is adapted very well, or animated in a style that allows the absurdity to play sort of freely, this might be a case of "Rock of Ages" all over again, where the film, by necessity, has little resemblance to the stage show.

I think animation would only do a disservice to the show, really. I don't see any advantages to having this turned into a cartoon.

You're probably right. I think it's more that the libretto at the moment is overtly and gleefully "stagey" more than "cinematic." Which was really refreshing onstage, but like ROA, needs a really skilled hand in adaptation.
