CCP Auditions Children for Les Mis, Miracle Worker

Crossville’s Cumberland County Playhouse holds auditions at the theater on Jan 15, for children’s roles in the musical Les Misérables and for the play The Miracle Worker.

Roles available in Les Mis include the boy Gavroche and his gang of Paris “street urchin” kids, and the girls young Cosette and Eponine (all sing and act, ages 8-12). The Miracle Worker, the classic American play by William Gibson about the family and childhood of Alabama author/lecturer and pioneer education advocate the blind and deaf, Helen Keller.

Casting is for several multicultural boys and girls ages 8-13 to act and possibly sing in live incidental music. Some will play blind children in the memory of Helen’s teacher, Annie
Sullivan. The role of Helen, a deaf and blind girl of 8 to 12 requires great concentration, physical stamina, and acting ability.

Auditions will be held on Tuesday, January 15, by appointment, beginning at 6:00pm Central Time. Appointments may be made with Meka D. Barrier at 931.484.4324 or by emailing mdoxtator@ccplayhouse.com. All are asked to prepare 16 bars of a song and a 30-45 second monologue, (bring sheet music in the proper key, or a cued-up cd/cassette instrumental
accompaniment). Those without a song may be asked to sing Happy Birthday. Children’s roles are sometimes double-cast by the Playhouse.

Les Mis, rated PG to PG 13, begins rehearsal in early February, and runs March 8 through May 3. The Miracle Worker (rated G) begins rehearsal April 5, and runs through May 17. Both productions will be available for low-cost school matinee performances, and teachers may call for details at 931.484.5000. Each show plays 3 to 5 times per week.

CCP Producing Director Jim Crabtree will direct Les Mis, assisted by Britt Hancock and Weslie Webster, with musical staging by Leila Nelson.
