RENT actually offered rush at first and only switched to a lottery when students were sleeping on 41st Street and there were safety issues. I don't know exactly when they switched to a lottery. Was it as early as 1996?

Either way, the answer is still RENT. I'm just unsure of the year.

And Mel Brooks' THE PRODUCERS was the very first Broadway show to begin the Premium Seats bit back in April 2001 just hours after Opening Night and the madness started the following morning on West 44th Street and up 8th Avenue.
