This is starting to feel like a big gamble to me. Why no trailer yet? I'm sure we'll get it with the Maleficent release on Friday, but still.

We would've seen it by now I think... unless it's a big surprise for Friday. But I have a feeling we'll get the unnecessary Cinderella trailer that was recently released.

^ You are probably right. This goes against everything I've learned about film promotion. Something feels wrong. . . Either it's going to be huge or its going to totally bomb. I don't see much in between here.

If a trailer isn't with Maleficent, I really don't know what to think. It's the most obvious choice. They still have nearly half a year to start promotion, but a teaser trailer would be nice. At least a poster and some images at the very least.

What ever happened with those character posters they showed a month ago? I'm pretty sure it was at some convention. I'm surprised those haven't shown up yet.

They showed something at this years CinemaCon. I think like you said they were just posters. A trailer (not the glass slipper teaser, a real trailer) for Cinderella however was screened. All the press said the film looks gorgeous.

But why no Meryl? I sense some trouble in the wood....

I don't think we're getting a trailer with Maleficent. I guess Cinderella will take that spot.

Besides that picture I posted above, that's the only ITW-related thing I found online from Cinemacon. Can't find anything in Instagram, Tumblrs, Getty/AP, etc.

Disney is a well oiled machine. They get promotional images, trailers and websites up and running very quickly, it's all about building online presence and gaining momentum. They had the first Maleficent trailer out in November of last year. Also (what others have said, irrelevant) Cinderella teaser up for a 2015 release. Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return, same thing.

I just think it's strange. Why are they in favor of promoting a film that's not even coming out this year over Into the Woods? Something's wrong. . .or really really right.

Being snarky, still doesn't answer my fair question. Why are they pulling up Cinderella a film coming out NEXT YEAR, and staying so quiet about Into the Woods?

I usually frequent Disney forums and last year there was a lot of anxiety about the fact that Disney kept everything "Frozen" under wraps-- Disney even had websites that posted early promotional materials remove them. There was especially a lot of question why Disney didn't release a teaser trailer until four months before the movie's premiere... Many people read this as signs of production difficulties and that the film would end up being not very good-- or even if it was quality, people wouldn't know about the film due to lack of early advertising and thus wouldn't see it. But obviously, Disney's marketing strategy worked out quite well.

Simply put, I wouldn't immediately assume that lack of promotional materials equals lack of confidence from Disney.

Wasn't there a new rule recently about how soon a film can start putting trailers in theaters? I remember it saying that 3/4 months before a film's release is now the earliest a studio can release a trailer and yet, I believe I've seen trailers released earlier than that recently.

Maybe they're just not sure how to market it and musicals are pretty hard to market. My friend said it would be PG-13-ish, so perhaps they're trying to find a happy medium between family friendly and more adult oriented material. Trailers are tough. Still, not at least having a few stills by now is kinda weird.

This string reminds me of all the angst some people here went through because there'd been no release of a JERSEY BOYS trailer... Then, the trailer was released and all (well, maybe not all) was right with the world.

I don't really think much of the CINDERELLA thing (hard to call it a trailer) running in theatres now...unless you have a Waterford/Swarovski/Baccarat fetish thing going on... :)

I think maybe they know Into the Woods will appeal to a more mature audience (as most movie musicals do) and they thought a trailer with Maleficent would give the idea of just another children's fairy tale.

Believe it or not the promotion of Frozen last year as extremely limited in the months leading up to the film. Only the teaser for the film was released in mid-June, and we had to wait until late September to get a full trailer. Whatever their strategy was it worked very well. Perhaps they didn't want to cannibalize or confuse the promotion Maleficent? They also have Big Hero 6 to promote so who knows. Maybe it will come with Planes 2?

The trailer could also come with Jersey Boys?
As far as the film, don't worry, it's not a mess. It's not effects-heavy and is very good though very different in tone from the stage show.

And speaking of the cannibalization of Maleficent. I imagine Disney is probably trying to keep their two A-listers (Streep-Deep/Jolie) at safe distances as they don't work cheap. Anyone know if it's in 3D?

Wildcard, it is highly unlikely that the trailer will come with Jersey Boys. The films are from competing companies. Usually companies attach trailers for their own films to movies currently in theaters.
