What about Jennifer Lawrence as Cinderella? Not sure about her vocal chops but she would act the crap out of the role.

In 10 years or so, Jennifer Lawrence will make a hell of a Baker's Wife.

Lawrence can sing a bit. She did a little song in House At The End of the Street and sounded pretty good.

I love the idea of Jason Segel as the Baker - the right combinaton of goofiness and earnestness. Another possibility is Ed Helms, who aslo sings well.

Assuming the Wolf doesn't double as a prince, I want Jack Black.

Neither Black or Segel would be acceptable choices for this movie. No a single one of the character in Into the Woods is a giant man-child which seems to be about the only character that either of those two are capable of playing.

John C Riely is my first choice for The Baker with Tina Fey as his Wife.

Anyone think Jennifer Lawrence could play Little Red? She has a young look and some meat on her bones.

I agree with others that Lawrence will make a great Baker's Wife at some point in her life. She'd be distracting as Little Red, since as Besty and others mentioned, casting big names in smaller roles turned out to be one of NINE's biggest detriments.
Completely agree that casting the manchild type actors as the Baker would be a huge mistake.

I think Joseph Gordon-Levitt should play one of the Princes. Remember how great he was when he sang "Make em Laugh" on 'Saturday Night Live'. This is also him singing "I Don't Want to Live on the Moon".

If I were directing this film, I wouldn't have the Prince double the Wolf, but I would have one actor play both Princes, in slightly different costume. Really emphasize the fact that this guy is the cookie-cutter Prince Charming, and that fairy tales rarely distinguish him from all the other princes.

Then, in the final minutes of the film, instead of the two princes returning again, we see a third identical prince with Sleeping Beauty.

I also think Raza Jaffrey would also be great as one of the Princes and maybe Aaron Tveit as well.

After tonight's episode of MODERN FAMILY, Nolan Gould becomes the frontrunner for the role of Jack.

If he's identical, how would we know he's a third one?

^ Exactly. The idea of having one actor double as the princes has potential. But it would probably come across too cheesy watching one actor sing a duet to himself.

"See, for me, that's the problem. She's got so many 'stock' characters to 'mix and match' that I fear what we'd get is a hodgepodge of past roles she's played, not an original character."

Wow. Did this really apply to Streep? Of all the actresses in the world, I can't think of another one who is so great at starting from scratch with each character building it from the inside out. Stock characters? Are you kidding? Of course, a few of her roles are exaggerated (as they need to be) but she hardly resorts to pulling out a "stock character" and just replaying it.

I have no doubt that Meryl Streep will put everything she knows as the greatest living film actress into this part -- she is too professional to sleepwalk through this role.

bobs3, I completely agree about Nolan Gould as Jack. He sounded great last night and I think he'd nail the comedy of the role.

I would looove to se Zac Efron as either cinderella's prince or the baker. It would be amazing to see him going back to his roots.

Is Christopher Plummer still able to sing? I think he'd be a great choice for the Mysterious Old Man.

"Well you know Christopher Plummer never really was able to sing. He was dubbed in the SOUND OF MUSIC..."

I know that. But he does have singing experience. On 'The Sound of Music' tour the tour lady said that the producers thought his singing was good, but they realized during filming Julie's voice was much stronger than his when it came to singing "Something Good". I don't know if anyone on here saw him in 'Cyrano de Bergerac' but he did win a Tony for Best Actor in a Musical for that role.

ETA: I'm not a fan of these films, but he also did sing in the animated films, 'Babes in Toyland' and 'Rock-a-Doodle'.

like most, I'm a huge meryl streep fan. that said, I will admit that the only time I've been truly disappointed in one of her performances was during another musical, mamma mia. I mean, do we remember "winner takes it all"? her hand motions were crazy, it looked like she was signaling a passing plane.

I'm sure she'll fare a little better with sondheim music over abba, but let's not forget that daniel day-lewis, another living legend flopped hugely in a rob marshall movie.

Is really unfair that Zac Efron doesn't get the recognition he deserves just because he was a Disney star. The truth of the matter is that he's amazing actor and singer with an amazing charisma who notoriously helped to bring back the love for musicals in the American culture.

Isn't he too young to be The Baker, though? How long have they been trying to have a baby, five months?
