I feel like some people are over praising this movie, and others are overlooking it's more interesting qualities. It could have gone hardcore with the guys injecting steroids straight into their dicks, but, if they had to make it more palatable for the masses, I think this was the best way to do it. The scene where Cody watches Tatum strip is excellent. More stylish touches like the blue and red ecstasy trip and Elvis' granddaughter and her piglet were welcome. The juxtaposition of Channing with McConaughey, showing what Tatum could become if he doesn't reevaluate his options, was well done. One problem for me is that while Pettyfer's performance is technically proficient, it lacks charisma. I've heard he's a dick in real life and clashed with Tatum on the set. I think if you can't get along with Channing Tatum, you're probably a dickbag.

I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter

To be fair, there were elements of the film I liked. I liked Channing Tatum's and Matthew McConaughey's performances. However, I think the film was poorly written and suffered from an identity crisis.

It was marketed as a feel good comedy/romance and it was really neither. It treated everything very lightly and glossed over huge issues. It was a drama but it seemed like it didn't want to "go there" for fear of losing it's lightness. At the end of the film I didn't really get it. There really were no real stakes. Plus, the ending with the very forced "happy ending" was really more than I could bear.

The dialogue was atrocious. Naturalistic dialogue typically doesnt work on stage or on screen-it needs a little panache. Wooden actors with flat line readings made some scenes a snooze.

Also, I didn't feel this film broke any ground in terms of exploring male sexuality. It showed a few tan, smooth asses-woop. I think this film could have been groundbreaking had it been more realisitc and actually had some actors willing to go full frontal. That is dangerous and exciting film making. what was on screen wasn't really all that thrilling.

I have to say McConaughney gave the bravest performance both emotionally and physically. I go so far as to say worthy of an Oscar nod. I guess during his big number his thong broke and he kept going (you can see in the continuity his thong is off and then its on again during his scene.) I hope theres a deleted scene of that! :)
