gothampc - Yes, Broadway does not have the same reach as TV and movies but the Oscars and Emmy's to me are a lot more boring award show. Really, most movies the majority of people have never heard of or seen. There is little entertainment. As for the Emmy's, no entertainment at all so unless you want to see people make acceptance speeches all night than enjoy.
"and I'm sure half of those 6 million viewers turned it off somewhere between the Newsies number & the Follies number."
My girlfriend left the room after that terrible opening taht made no sense whatsoever. If they wanted to attract viewers, they should've had Spiderman performances on the show and advertised it like crazy.
Oh, everyone calm down. CBS knows the show is a basic ratings dud. It renewed its contract recently while the Tonys were still in the ratings basement. What matters to them is the one percent who DO watch are an upscale demographic that they can sell air time to upscale products that appeal to said upscale demo. I'm sure they wish for a bigger audience, but they do not lose money by broadcasting the Tonys. Its not leaving for cable anytime soon. And if it does it will be commercial cable.
True, for the most part. The Tonys is on their portfolio for variety. If it could make money, it would be in sweeps. They have an angel in Les Moonves.
