Is there only going to be just one Annie? No alternates or double/triple casting?

I don't understand how when hiring child actors they always double cast- except when doing Annie. Why is that?

I assume none of us will have heard of her, but still exciting news.

And drew, I've never seen a production, but it is possible that Annie does not actually have that much stage time, thus keeping the actress within the guidelines of child labor laws. That's just a guess, though.

I know you. I know you. I know you.

I think the policy of double casting child actors started later. The original Broadway productions of ANNIE, OLIVER, SOUND OF MUSIC to name a few didn't double cast the child actors. It seems that trend started with LES MISERABLES which double cast child actors because of British labor laws. Ditto, MARY POPPINS, BILLY ELLIOTT etc. They simply kept those policies when the shows transferred.

That would make sense. Mary Lennox in TSG, which didn't start on the West End, wasn't double cast (at least not evenly -- did she have an alternate?).

Yes, Daisy Egan later in the run had an alternate as did the tour, but I don't believe it was ever an even split of the performances.

I suppose it made sense to keep the Billy Elliott triple casting (which is actually what British labor law demands - not just double casting) because of the heavy dance component.

It will be interesting to see if MATILDA will continue to use three actresses stateside.

I'm hoping the reason they refused to give Jackie Hoffman a reading for Miss Hannigan is that she will be the next Annie.

Some of the artwork has been leaked already, and I know I'm surprised and delighted at the casting.

That is one scary looking dog.

She can just replace it with one of her dogs, since they've already made their Broadway debuts.

With Patti as Annie, we'd have to have Glenn Close as Hannigan. Maybe Michael Cerveris as Daddy Warbucks? Boyd Gaines & Laura Benanti as Rooster & Lily?

"It will be interesting to see if MATILDA will continue to use three actresses stateside."

There are a seven Matilda's in London at the moment, Sophia Keily, Eleanor Worthington-Cox, Cleo Demetriou, kerry Ingrams, who are currently playing Matilda, with Jade Marner, Isobelle Molloy and Hayley Canham, waiting in the wings come in to come in and take over from the current Matilda's, the role of Matilda is a massive role and she is on stage the majority of the show, with a lot of dialogue to remember, Matilda is the biggest role in the show, so therefore exhausting, hence needing a minimum of 4 very young, capable and extraordinary actresses and would expect New York to follow suit.

I doubt its a larger role though than say the title role of ANNIE who is in all but just a few scenes.

Actually - the role of Annie has surprisingly few lines. She is on stage for a lot of the show - but quite a bit of that time is spent as more of an observer than a scene driver. I get the impression that Matilda is a bit different - though I haven't actually seen the show.

Kerry and Sophia have left. Jade's first show was last Friday. Hayley starts in August. I assume Cleo or Eleanor will leave by then.

It is indeed a large and demanding role.

Are they going to announce which theatre they will be in? It says a Nederlander Theatre so does that mean The Palace? The Lunt Fontanne? The Richard Rodgers?

Considering none of the current shows in any of the Nederlander theaters have posted a closing notice, BroadwayBen, no, they won't be announcing their theater tomorrow.

Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.
