How do I get a good ticket to Porgy and Bess?

Hey Everyone,
Every year, I take a trip to NYC with my dad to see a bunch of Broadway musicals. Usually, we get great seats for shows and spend about 100-125 dollars per ticket. This year, we want to see Porgy and Bess. It seems that all of the good tickets are premium seats these days, with prices near 200 bucks a pop. We don't have that kind of money. We also don't want to spend our short vacation waiting in line at the TKTS booth or trying to win rush tickets. Does anyone have any ideas for us? Should we wait and hope that some tickets get released closer to February or get crappy seats now?
Thanks!

Yeah, I hate this.

Let's face it. Unless it's THE BOOK OF MORMON there are going to be a lot of these premium seats being released at TKTS or full-price on the same day - rewarding people who leave booking things to the last minute. Those who want to book far in advance get punished with the crappy seats!

I don't know what you should do and have the same problem myself. If it's a show I've been ultra-keen for (e.g. BERNADETTE PETERS NIGHT MUSIC) I have just paid premium price. Because this is the main point of my holiday and the expense of getting to and staying at NYC is too much I don't mind spending the extra $$$, and at least tell myself that I'm supporting the show.

But if you don't have the money then I don't know what you should do. Maybe wait until the show has started so we can tell if it is going to sell well or not. There will still be enough time if it does start to sell well to get tickets and if it doesn't sell well then you will have other options..

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

There's a discount code on Broadwaybox.com for $94 (30% off regular top price) until 2/26. Last I checked, it was good for ANY performance including weekends.

You and your dad can sit:

- 5 and 6 seats off the aisle in the side orchestra sections (for example, seats 9-11) in the front of the orchestra up to row H. These are good if you have a keen interest in sitting close to see minute detail (costume details, facial expressions, etc.)

- 5 and 6 seats off the aisle in the side orchestra sections in the back of the orchestra, beginning with row L. These are actually really good seats because they are a bit higher up and no one is in front of you, which is especially great if you're short.

- Orchestra center row R and back. I wouldn't suggest it because the mezzanine overhang will potentially impede the view if you get too far back in the orchestra.

- Front Mezz side sections, row A or B, 5 and 6 seats off the aisle. I just bought these at the box office opening. Great view. Mezzanine hangs over row J or so of the orchestra, so not far back.

- Front Mezz side sections, row C and back, on the aisle.

- Front Mezz center section, row C and back. The first two are blocked out of the code, but the third row and back are available. You can sit equal to row L of the orchestra or so in the center but just up in the mezzanine. Great view.

When everyone wants "great seats" you're going to have to pay for it, plain and simple. The main thing to remember is that there's really a lot of good seats at good prices if you're willing to open up your expectations a bit. In the Rodgers, it's practically stadium seating so unless you're rear orchestra the views are going to be fantastic.

I gather that you are coming in Feb? If you are coming in Feb, lines at TKTS will be rather short so you will hardly waste too much time in line.

Of course, we shall see how Porgy and Bess does to see if TKTS is even an option.

When I want to cut corners and save, but want to be close, I do what broadway_show_fan recommends. I use a discount code and sit on the farther orchestra sides close to the front. It has always worked out just fine.

Row L on the sides is a great seat in the Richard Rodgers theater and it's been available with the discount. It's raised slightly above the rows in front of it.

I decided to opt for a little closer because I wanted to see the actor's expressions up close. But if I go again I may choose row L.
