Actually, most of the music was fine, as they were done by someone else. The lyrics ranged from trite to clunky (especially early on in the show). It got a tiny bit better in the second act.
I saw the show on Tuesday (two days before "opening night"), and while the ideas in the show were interesting (Sister Aimee does make a somewhat fascinating character), the book could have been stronger, and the songs are nothing really to write home about. But Carolee Carmello was excellent (all I could keep thinking was "why is such a good singer saddled with such lame lyrics"). Judy Kaye was woefully underutilized. Roz Ryan played it a little too modern (this show really takes place around the same time period as "Chicago", and Roz's modern "mmmhmm's" and flair works for "Chicago because it is so stylized. It's funny here, but ultimately doesn't work.
Also, I didn't realize how similar Carolee's belt is sometimes to Betty Buckley's. And she keeps on ascending and decending a white staircase during the show. So I kept on imagining this is what watching "Carrie: The Musical" might have been like...
