God, how I wanted to love this play. I had been so excited about it, having missed it originally and now with Hugh Dancy - Whoo Boy! And I have to say, I was totally drawn in right from the beginning. Right from Nina Arianda's delicious entrance I was ear to ear grinning.

And than they started to read the play. And they kept reading the play. I thought eventually they would stop reading the play and tell a story and I guess about 30 minutes later they did. For a bit. I got excited again when we started to find out about the characters and...Oh, wait. They're reading the play again. Ok, well they're going to have to get back to telling a story soon.

So I wait.

And I wait.

I was still waiting.

Now don't get me wrong, there was some FANTASTIC acting going on during these parts so I wasn't bored with it but at the same time I wasn't very invested. Scattered through the plays 100 or so minutes was what I thought could be a fascinating story of power and role reversal but we never really got to get to that until the VERY end of the play. And by that point there were so many questions unanswered about these people we'd pretty much just seen read us a play onstage.

*****SPOILERS*****

I found the last scene to be totally unsatisfying. I really felt it needed to be a LOT stronger than it was. When she ties him up, she needs to rip his shirt off, take off his belt and crack it as a whip to scare the living shlt out of him. THEN blackout and end the play. Ending it the way it was just leaves you wanting so much more. Or really just wanting anything. I did wonder though after talking to a friend, if Vanda was really a person, though. I'm sure this has been discussed before but I didn't believe she was actually a human being, per se. I thought she was Aphrodite. (I even waited afterwards to ask her if I was right) But if that's true, or even if it wasn't, what was her plan there? What did she want to accomplish with him and why? Why being the more important question, I think. There were just too many things left unresolved that I felt should have been resolved in this story.

Again, fantastic acting but to me, an incredibly weak script.

I didn't get this play, on a level of" not getting it" that is difficult to explain...It wasn't vulgar, it wasn't stupid, it was well acted, but after maybe ten minutes, it was, for me, virtually unendurable.

And boy, I really wanted to love it...

Behind the fake tinsel of Broadway is real tinsel.

Yeah, it was just such an odd play. Not good, not the worst thing ever put on the stage but I DO NOT understand the praise for it.

I have a number of friends -- two are playwrights -- who find David Ives' plays generally, ultimately unsatisfying. They are rather mystified by his success.

Jordon.. I couldn't agree with you more.
I ran to see this and like the first 15 minutes.
Then they read the play
and read the play

and it was a snooze fest despite the two wonderful actors.
And to charge $128 for a two character one set play
where the actors get to read for 3/4 of it.

Even though I paid $64--- I felt very ripped off

Overall an awful night in the theatre.
I call this the Emperor's New Fur.
There is no play!

I jumped when this came up on TDF. I agree with you, I was fighting to stay awake. Even with Nina's tush three rows away, there was nothing to it imo.

They had a talk back with the AD and people were talking about S+M and kinkiness and it was totally unkinky,
I ran for coffee as I was seriously crashing...

It was really fun on Saturday night when the door stuck and Nina was pounding on it, cursing and shrieking. I think it put the audience in a great mood for the rest of the night. Personally, I had a blast. Maybe they should keep that bit.
