The Harvey Girls |
"It's a Great Big World" is one of my favorite moments in movie musicals, and the entire Atchison sequence is a masterpiece.
And it's fin to watch Young Angela Lansbury be bitchy!

I like The Harvey Girls a lot. But watching Angela as a bitch is always fun: Manchurian Candidate, Gaslight, State of the Union.
The Atcheson, Topeka and Santa Fe number is up there with the great movie musical sequences.

Was this ever turned into a stage musical? If not, do you think it could? (whether it "should" is a totally different topic of discussion)

I do think the material and the history of the time would be perfect for a stage musical.
The Harvey Girls is one of the all-time great musicals, and to think we still have one of its stars with us. And ditto: the railroad number is a masterpiece.

I unfortunately missed Harvey Girls on the big screen last Thursday, but have been singing It's a Great Big World to myself all weekend. I love this movie.
Doesn't one of the girls just sort of disappear halfway through the movie?
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

Here's an interesting photo of the Harvey House in Chicago when it opened in 1899.
I love the film, but I don't think a stage production could ever really do it justice. Look what happened to Meet Me in St. Louis, Singin' in the Rain and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.

I think it could be a great stage show and the best part is (as John Fricke pointed out in the talk back) there were 7 writers listed on the film. Which ended up hurting the story in the end so its kind of a blank slate. There are lots of gaps to fill but the outline is there. And once flushed out I think this would be a really charming show. Probably have to throw in a few more songs but Johny Mercer wrote one or two songs in his life so thats an easy fix. anyways just a few thoughts. Anyone going to A Star is Born tomorrow night??

Angela Lansbury once said that somebody actually spit on her in the street "for being mean to Judy"!

I just re-watched The Harvey Girls for a blog post and it's fascinating. The film has more to do with the women's careers than their disposable love interests. It was released during WWII when women were gaining independence in the workplace again. I agree that with a little more structure and a little less dubbing it could have been better remembered today.
