I don't think I've ever seen Lorne tear up before at ANYthing. Wow. Something got thru.
LOVED the original auditions bits- who knew?
SNAFU- Bask in the glory, U and all the crew totally deserve it!

I enjoyed it, for the most part. Agreed that they didn't need so much Kanye West. And the part with the music characters dragged a little. I understand there are so many great ones, but it should have been a little shorter. All the old clips with Gilda Radner made me wish she was alive to be there. Weekly SNL Saturday Night Live Thread

Can anyone explain the jokes about Jon Lovetz being dead? Like was it about his career or what? I guess I just wasn't sure why it was funny.

Having worked on the show many times, I can say that the SNL crew is the best there is. The logistics involved in putting this show on are mind boggling. Congratulations to you, SNAFU!

I was in Studio 8G (Seth Meyers set). They had a HUGE live feed. There were two open bars and constant array of various finger foods, all incredibly good. I piggged out on the Dim sun. I was free to wander 8H though it was pretty tight in there. It is already a small space and they added bleachers to the main section for the audience.
After the show we were all bussed over to The Plaza Hotel. I was sitting behind Alex Trebec. Was a fun night of Star gazing. There were open bars everywhere and food stations serving up wonderful dishes. I was in a steak eating overload.
I was loath to take pictures because I always feel that SNL events like these are considered "SAFE" places where celebs can let their hair down without worrying about being recorded.
I did speak with Victoria Jackson for a bit. I had worked with her back in the day with Toonces the Cat Who Could Drive a Car. She is very sweet though bats hit crazy. Felt bad that she did not have any camera time. SNL is her only claim to fame.

Didn't she also run for public office too? and I think the BS crazy part was why they didn't use her- who knows what she would have said/done.
I expect that's why Dennis Miller didn't also make the cut. Who wants to give valuable time to people who've shown only their own ego driven nastiness.

ON the other hand- no Christine Ebersole? Tim Kazurinsky?Brian Doyle Murray? I totally get while Lorne would wipe out the years of the casts when he wasn't at the helm ( mean but get it) but really? Cheri Oteri in the Audience? I wonder if there was a "payback" of some kind going on here like w Nora Dunn.

Seriously though -- shame on them for inviting that Sarah Palin filth, and then actually giving her a couple of minutes when others got zero.

Dennis Miller probably was invited and chose not to attend. Lorne himself is a Republican and pretty right wing. If Victoria Jackson was invited I am sure everyone was.
Sabrelady, Eddie Murphy, Billy Crystal, Joe Piscopo were during the Lorne sabbatical. There was no Mary Gross either.

Lorne being Republican is fairly well known- after all, Alec Baldwin was playing a Lorne expy on "30 Rock," and his progressive conservatism was a big part of his character.

Re: Jon Lovitz being "dead," that was a joke on two levels. First, his career is dead. Second, SNL regulars know that when Phil Hartman was killed by a drugged up ex-wife, ostensibly after provocation by Andy Dick, Lovitz confronted Dick, who told him, "The Hartman Curse is on you now- you're next." It's obviously not something they would joke about publicly, given the tragic circumstances of Hartman's death, but to those in the know, the joke is a double entendre.

And no Robin Duke, Mark Mckinney, Tony Rosato. ( Tho to be fair Tony has severe mental health issues) But what the hey- "what there is is cherce"

The only thing about the Lovitz bit that bothered me is its the kinda thing Jewish people don't do for fear of calling the Evil Eye.( Hope He don't die in the next year or that's what will be said)

Tim Kazurinsky replaced John Davidson as The Wizard in the first national Wicked tour just a week or two ago in LA. He probably wasn't able to come.

I'm surprised there was as much of the Jean Doumanian year as there was. But then, I've only watched the first three hours, there's about six more to go.

"It's obviously not something they would joke about publicly, given the tragic circumstances of Hartman's death, but to those in the know, the joke is a double entendre."

I don't really think that was what they were getting at at all.

Yeah, darquegk, you contribute so many insightful posts to this board - I love reading your comments - but, I'm with Namo, you're way off on the Lovitz bit. No way was anything you mentioned about the Andy Dick/Phil Hartman thing even subconsciously written into the bit. It was just a bit. It worked because, yes, we don't really see Lovitz very much these days and because they knew he'd be a good sport about it, not because of the "Hartman curse".

I really enjoyed it. Yes, it was bloated, yes, there were too many excerpted sketches and, yes, some of it was uneven, but it was still wonderful to see all that talent together on one stage. I guess it got extended past the original end time. My DVR missed the last 30 mins. Last thing I saw was the in memoriam section. Miss anything good in the last 30?

I wouldn't have anticipated this, but I think the best part of the evening was the Seinfeld segment. It was a smart, funny and unforced way to integrate some great talent. Also, I also loved Jane Curtin on Weekend Update, though, damn do I want to treat her to a teeth whitening. Oh, and seeing all the audition clips was such a treat. Had no idea so many characters that made it to air came out of the cast members' auditions.

The only thing I found in bad taste were the Melissa McCarthy and Emma Stone imitations of Chris Farley and Gilda. Some things are sacred and second rate imitations of these two stars rubbed me the wrong way.

Oh, BTW, Jane what kind of work did you do with SNL?

The Wayne's World bit was in the last 30 minutes...and I think the weird Kanye performance (so not important.)

I was kinda mixed on those two impersonations, as well. It just struck me as odd.
