DVD and Blu-ray Disc bargains! |
The pick of the October bunch is the full Director's Cut of KWAIDAN -- I've been waiting for that for a long time.
I'll probably pick up the Ozu Crime Drama set, maybe one or two others.
I picked up:
RIDE THE PINK HORSE
DON'T LOOK NOW
NIGHT OF THE HUNTER
Happy puppy here.

That Mulholland disc is one of my most anticipated releases of the 4th quarter.
What's not to love about Ann Miller in a David Lynch movie!

Ann Miller is brilliant in MULHOLLAND DRIVE. The way she looks at Diane in the dinner scene and pats her hand...genius.
"What's not to love about Ann Miller in a David Lynch movie!"
Basically everything else about the film.

Today only. Downton Abbey Seasons 1, 2 & 3 Blu-ray for $24.99 on Amazon.
Just a warning about B&N: I ordered two selections from this sale through B&N (Criterion also has a discount now, but only 20% off). They kept authorizing the charge on my Visa debit EVERY DAY for a week before it was processed and shipped. These authorizations just hang around until my bank drop them after about 3-4 days. The result was tying up funds for 3x-4x the amount of the order. Sometimes they would try and authorize the amount for both titles, sometimes for one title. It was a MESS. I emailed them about this issue and they just said this is how they do it and apologized for any inconvenience. Then just continued doing it. I've ordered from them countless times in the past and never had this occur until now. I don't know if my love for Criterion is worth the hassle of B&N.
Wow. Thanks for the heads up.
That sounds like a pain in the ass.
I would definitely avoid ordering from them for something like that.
Criterion also offers a 50% sale once a year in the fall sometime.
SANSHO THE BAILIFF
SILENT OZU: THREE CRIME DRAMAS
SAFE
RED DESERT
PEOPLE ON SUNDAY
TROUBLE IN PARADISE
PIERRE ETAIX COLLECTION
and I had to order Ray's THE MUSIC ROOM.
Taz, I get the Eclipse releases when they're on a topic I'm interested in -- those pre and postwar Kurosawa sets are essential for any serious Kurosawa fan who wants to find out more about the great man's less known work. I'll do the occasional blind buy, like that BASIL DEARDEN'S LONDON UNDERGROUND set which has some good solid stuff in it, like SAPPHIRE and ALL NIGHT LONG. They're good solid transfers, as a rule, no frills or extras. I think it's great that they do these.
Family Video has a sale online where all previously viewed Blu-Ray discs are $5. I've bought from them before and have always been extremely happy.

New Criterions announced today. Very happy about Haneke finally being included in the collection.
Thanks for the heads up Fantod.
I have to say I'm underwhelmed by the November releases, especially after the amazing lineup in October.
Code Unknown has an excellent transfer from Kino. I wish they would have chosen The Piano Teacher or Cache.
If Criterion's APU Trilogy release is anything like the high quality of the screenings I attended at Film Forum, it will be the Blu-Ray release of the year, and maybe the decade. Maybe even the millennium.
And an upgrade for IKIRU? Yeegoddamnhaw! Let's hope they do the same for RED BEARD before too much longer!

Yeah, I'm super excited about the Apu trilogy. I've always wanted to see it, because I hear it's amazing. If you look at the amount of restoration that went into it, it's pretty incredible.

Satyajit Ray's APU TRILOGY is available on Amazon for roughly half price, at $49.99. Trust me on this -- if you really love cinema, this will be the best fifty buck you'll ever f*cking spend.
Flash sale at Criterion through tomorrow at noon, 50% off. The code is SUZY.

Picked-up Blu-rays of MY OWN PRIVATE IDAHO, NAKED LUNCH and VIDEODROME. Also received a $10 credit via Facebook last week. Between the 50% off flash sale, the $10 credit, and free shipping (on orders over $50), my total was $54.34 including tax for all three Blu-rays. Just over $18 per disc. Not too shabby.
