I think I'm gonna get the complete Jacques Tati set.
I already have 3 of the 6 films on criterion DVD, but the three I don't have aren't sold separately.

....but the world goes 'round
From what I've read, the Tati set is so completely remastered and cleaned up that it makes those old DVDs obsolete.

I am friggin' PISSED that Criterion doesn't release THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG and THE YOUNG GIRLS OF ROCHEFORT individually. I have absolutely NO INTEREST in purchasing the Jacques Demy boxed set for just those 2 films.
It's handled.
I want RIDE THE PINK HORSE, but it won't be released until a week or so, and this is only for in-stock discs.
By the way, Costco was recently selling a bunch of Criterions for $19.99 each. I picked up "The Last Emperor," "8 1/2" and "It Happened One Night" just about 2 weeks ago.

The Red Shoes for me. $20 after half off is not exactly what I would call cheap, but these sales really do a number on me.
Sick, pathetic POS

Just ordered a Watership Down and Don't Look Now--thanks Taz!
Carlos, I can't recommend the Jacques Demy box set highly enough--I think every film in it is a gem--but I do get not wanting to pay $50 bucks for just two films. I expect that Cherbourg, and maybe Rochefort will be available on their own sometime this year...

I haven't bit yet on the Criterion remasters of Cherbourg and Rochefort, because I'm not happy with the way they look.
There is an unpleasant yellow tint over them, like someone was breathing cigarette smoke on the negative for 30 years (and who's to say they weren't?).
It's really ugly.
I thought I might be able to "get used to it" when I watched them both on Hulu Plus (which carries all of the Criterion releases in HD streaming).
Nope. I'll stick to my DVDs.
You can see the comparisons here.

I find that Costco will often have Criterion titles available, at roughly 50% off. I picked up IF... and THE GREAT BEAUTY recently.
I'm dying to see DON'T LOOK NOW, it can't get here fast enough...

Best--I'm gonna side with DVDBeaver and Agnes Varda here. The Miramax disc of Rochefort lookes way too saturated for me--Demy talks in the documentary about how it's all meant to be pastels and slightly faded, "like a memory." I much prefer the look of the BluRay. I am biased though--I remember on a French Demy email forum all the discussion about how Miramax messed up the colours on the Rochefort disc.
Cherbourg looks very good to me, as does Donkey Skin--the only ones I can compare to DVDs, but I can't speak with as much authority about the colour with those ones (they were also supervised by Varda--but your mileage could vary with that qualification.)
