DVD and Blu-ray Disc bargains! |
Had to get The Game and The Ice Storm. For now. Recently picked up the Criterion release of It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World at Costco.

The first time I saw Ice Storm, it wasn't what I was expecting and I hated it. Something made me revisit the films a few years later and I was engrossed in it and have loved it ever since. And The Game is my favorite Fincher film. I was a bit saddened that it didn't pick up any Oscar noms.

Okay, I kinda really hate it when you guys mention discs I haven't ordered yet, but suddenly feel compelled to own ...
*adds Ice Storm and Brief Encounter to the endless list*
And for those of you who care about such things, Blu-ray Discs are still the best quality available! No streaming service offers the same quality. Not even VUDU (which comes the closest).
So go ahead and watch your low-def, blurry, pixelated HD, phony quality streaming if you want to.
Until they get it right ... and they haven't yet ...
BLU-RAY RULES.
So there.

Completely agree, Besty! Nothing compares, ESPECIALLY to Criterion. The best! I am beyond thrilled they are finally releasing an Almodovar film. I am just hoping that is the first of many! I would also love them to give Hedwig a Blu-Ray release.
New job with an uptick and income plus less driving means less mileage and therefore money for gas meant I was allowed to go nuts this year.
My buys:
Berlin Alexanderplatz- Yup. I can afford it with this sale. Now only if I have the time to watch all of it.
Shoah- Like, I love my thought process that I bought two of the most time consuming discs in the whole damn Collection.
Persona Blu-Ray
4 by Agnes Varda
Eisenstein The Sound Years
That is enough for me.

Now, if we could only get Criterion to pick up Raise the Red Lantern...

I'll never switch over to an all streaming library of my movies. I like having my nearly 3,000 titles on the walls and being surrounded by them.
I'm still baffled when friends say they just download movies (either legally or illegally), and are shocked when they see me and my partner's BD collection--which is relatively small, in the hundreds, nothing approaching the thousands like some of you guys' collections. There's just nothing about streaming that can compare to owning a physical copy of a movie. I love buying new BDs, it's one of my favorite things to do, and I love being able to look at my collection and choose to watch VICKY CHRISTINA BARCELONA for the 30th time. I would never do that with a movie I own digitally. I don't even download the digital copies that come with most BDs. Streaming is great for rentals, but the idea of not owning physical BDs is pretty crazy to me.

Criterion-wise, I picked up:
MASTER OF THE HOUSE, a sweet little domestic comedy/drama from Carl Theodor Dreyer, believe it or not.
L'ECLISSE and LA NOTTE -- two Antonionis I've been wanting to check out for a while.
PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK -- complete with a paperback reprint of Joan Lindsay's novel.
WAGES OF FEAR -- to go along with the Blu-Ray of SORCERER I picked up a few weeks back.
LIFE OF OHARU -- maybe this will be the Mizoguchi where I finally see what all the fuss is about.
PATHS OF GLORY -- I already see what all the shouting's about on this one.
I just didn't have it in me to drop $50.00 on the half-price Lean/Coward box set. Too many movies I'd seldom if ever watch, I'd only ever watch the sublime BRIEF ENCOUNTER anyway.

They are slowly releasing Little House On The Prairie on Bluray, but the entire series is available in HD to download on iTunes for just $39.99! Shocked by the price and I jumped on it just in case it was a mistake. Considering they are selling blu-rays for $18.00 a season, this is a bargain.
Leave poor Mary alone! Luckily she didn't drive much story when you consider how many episodes there are.
Updated On: 9/10/14 at 11:00 AMI liked that episode where Mary put her hands under the water and was all like "Wa Wa! Wa Wa!"
Or was that Helen Keller?

Anyone have any idea if Barnes and Noble will be doing their November Half Off Criterion sale again?

I sure hope so! The flash sale on the Criterion website should have been last week but I guess they aren't doing it this year. I have so many films I want to add to my collection!

What am I missing here? The 3 blu-rays that I looked at on the Criterion website are cheaper on Amazon. (All That Jazz, Anatomy of a Murder, The Big Chill.)
