DVD and Blu-ray Disc bargains! #327

I just wanted to point out that the BITWC is pretty bare-bone and Criterion noted on its website that they plan on putting out a larger edition. IFC/Sundance Selects were hedging their bets, believing that Adele Exarchopoulos had a reasonable shot at major acting awards and perhaps an Oscar nomination that they wanted an affordable disc available- hence why it was already at a much lower in price by Criterion Collection standards.

I got The Last Days of Disco and Rohmer's Six Moral Tales from the Criterion flash sale.

The Hurt Locker Blu-Ray was one of the first ones I ever bought. Excellent sound and audio quality but lacks extras (there's at least an insightful commentary by Bigelow but nothing much else) given it was put out by Summit Entertainment who had to hastily put out a disc because it was put out originally in the summer by them.

Just got an email from Screenarchives.com. 36 Twilight Time titles will be $10 off each March 19-March 24. The Twilight Time
discs are never discounted, so thought I'd let everyone know. I've loved everything I've gotten from them except Titus (terrible transfer, the DVD actually looks better than their High-Def version).

This is a rare sale, indeed, for Twilight Time! First one that I know of. I only have a few discs because of the cost.

But I will say that "Lost Horizon" and "Picnic" both have fantastic image and sound. Picnic, in particular, is a huge improvement over the old DVD.

I also have Oliver!, but that's not included in this sale. Neither are pre-orders. I'm interested in "All the King's Men," but I will wait to find out if it's a good-quality transfer.

Picnic and Lost Horizon are the 2 I am planning on picking up!

Steel Magnolias is the only 1 I own from the sale list. If you love the movie, the transfer is a great choice for upgrade.

Also have Bye Bye Birdie, The Way We Were, and Oliver!, all of which I highly recommend on blu (Birdie especially feels like an entirely new experience). Titus is the only 1 I regret buying (I guess many copies were returned per a bluray.com thread).

I believe Sleepless in Seattle and Philadelphia are the same editions licensed in the UK and it's actually significantly cheaper to purchase on the Amazon UK site than going with the Twilight edition (I'm pretty sure both are region free in UK).

The June announcements for the Criterion Collection came out and All That Heaven Allows got the dual-format upgrade. It also got a bulk up in supplements, that includes Mark Rappaport's Rock Hudson's Home Movies.

Bookmark that for the next Criterion sale.

Thanks, strummergirl. I already paid a pretty penny for the first Criterion DVD. Still, I'm glad they have restored it, and I hope it's a noticeable improvement. The first one is dark, muddy, and overly grainy. I know that's partially to do with how it was originally lit and photographed, but it seemed to go too far (think earlier releases of The Godfather movies).

I won't shell out for it again unless it's a significant improvement and has a decent sale price.

I hope they tackle Magnificent Obsession at some point, too. That one was/is in worse shape than All That Heaven Allows.

Both are terrific Sirk films, though.

And for those interested, "All That Heaven Allows" is (for the most part) the inspiration for "Far From Heaven."

I wonder if they will upgrade their Magnificent Obsession and Written on the Wind as well?

Like Besty, I remember paying what seemed like a fortune for the original Criterion release, but I am tempted to upgrade... at some point.
