| Datalounge rumor: Paulo Szot as Georges in La Cage? Posted On:11/1/09 at 08:11
| According to the theatre gossip thread at Datalounge, Paulo Szot is being considered for the role of Georges in the upcoming revival of La Cage aux Folles. I hadn't thought of him, but I really love that idea and he would certainly sing the hell out of "Song on the Sand" and "Look Over There" - in fact, I can't wait to hear him, now that his name has come up as a possibility. I think the audiences who have enjoyed him in South Pacific would be interested to see him in another show and La Cage strikes me as a good match. Thoughts?

It sounds like such a freakin' good idea that it's probably wishful thinking rather than an actual rumour. Still, it would be AMAZING. :3

| Ahh!!! I hadn't thought of this as an idea either, Smaxie, but now that it's been mentioned I am having a really hard time picturing anyone else being better for that role. This would be brilliant casting if it were to happen.

| BRILLIANT idea! I pray it becomes a reality.

| It's directed by Terry Johnson and choreographed by Lynne Page.
According to Todd Haimes, the artistic director of the Roundabout, the Van Dyke-Rivera strategy — casting a couple of talented no-names and crossing your fingers — is really a second choice these days. “Your first choice,” he said, “is to get a star who’s also great.”

| I agree that this is not a casting option that I had thought about originally. However, it is one that I am now in love with after hearing it.

| We'll they'd probably figure a way to work around that, should this turn out to be true.

| Szot will be done with THE NOSE at the Met on March 25 and LA CAGE is supposed to start previews on April 6. That's completely doable from a rehearsal point of view. And it's not like he's performing at the Met every night. There are only six performances of THE NOSE from March 5-23.

| I wasn't planning on seeing this revival, as I find the show a big fat bore, but Szot would certainly be a draw for me. Anybody over that Patinkin creature.

Can they figure out a way to get Paolo to lose his shirt? But if this is fact and it interferes with his appearing in The Nose, conniptions will be had by all.

Isn't Patinkin attached to the new Hal Prince show that's going up in London this spring? I love the idea of Paulo doing the role. I hope he can fit it into his opera schedule - even if he has to go in/out like he has with South Pacific.

| ^ A friend of mine at National Arts Management, who is doing the casting for La Cage, told me that Patinkin has already passed on the role of Georges. It wouldn't surprise me if he was doing the Hal Prince show in London then.
