Tonight's Rachel Maddow is required viewing.  She skillfully weaves the various narratives of this complex story together - from the history of mass violence against LGBT people in modern American history to ISIS's  'go your own way' lone wolf strategy for terrorist attacks in the West.  I wouldn't be surprised if she's the only person in broadcast news to even have mentioned tragic events from our past like the Upstairs Lounge Fire.  I have to admit, although I was just a kid at the time, until seeing her show, I had no idea that the Atlanta Olympics bomber had also targeted abortion clinics and gay clubs.  Anyway, do yourself a favor and DVR one of the later airings.

I think this story is a bit more complicated and it is pretty early to draw the conclusions people are drawing.  It is absolutely horrific, but the story has gone from him being a supporter or Isis  to being a homophobe to him being gay.  What if this was a crime of passion?  There are signs he was trying to get away after his initial attack.

Anderson Cooper did an important thing on CNN. He took the time to read aloud the names of every single one of the, at the time, identified victims and told us a little about each of them.

I just know too many Muslim gay men that are bordering on a pshychosis for most of their adult life too.

It is not strange if you think they are raised with the Sharia and being taught that homosexuals must be punished with death.

We need stricter laws for this and more education about the naturality of homosexuality.

Omar Mateen's current wife, Noor, told the FBI she was with him when he bought ammunition and a holster, several officials familiar with the case said. She told the FBI that she once drove him to the gay nightclub, Pulse, because he wanted to scope it out....Authorities are considering filing criminal charges against Noor for failing to tell them what she knew before the brutal attack, law enforcement officials say, but no decision has been made.

From a strictly legal perspective, it will be interesting to see how this new wrinkle plays out, especially with respect to spousal privilege.  My understanding, based on years of watching Law & Order, is that a wife can't testify against a spouse regarding that spouse's words.  That said, if she drove him there knowing his intent, that seems the deeds of a pretty straightforward accomplice.

She might as well have pulled the trigger. That bitch has the blood of 49 innocent lives on her hands. Instead of trying to talk her piece of shit husband out of the attack sh should have alerted the authorities. But no, this dumb bitch accompanies him to get the weapons and then drives him to Pulse so he can scope it out. That sounds like an accomplice to me. She needs to pay for the crimes to the fullest extent of the law.

Spousal privilege applies in cases of testifying against a spouse who is being prosecuted.  You can't prosecute a dead man, so I assume it can't apply here.

I agree, but I'm not sure if a wife is required to report an impending crime she expects her husband may commit.  Words aside, driving him there knowing his intent appears to make her an accomplice.

You're not sure? She is not required but she should have. Just like his ex co-worker who stated to reporters that he knew this was coming and he wasn't surprised because of behavior he has exhibited and things he has said in the past. 

These people sat around and did absolutely NOTHING. NOT A DAMN THING. And now 49 people are dead and 53 more are in hospitals suffering from the injuries inflicted.

IF YOU SEE SOMETHING SUSPICIOUS - - - REPORT IT. PLAIN AND SIMPLE.

Sorry for my rant(s). It's just the more that is revealed, we learn that this could have been prevented.

 

(1) Mateen is on the FBI's radar for 2 years, he's also on the No Fly List yet managed to purchase weapons.

(2) He made threats, spoke of killing people, spewed hate speech and was so toxic that his co-worker quit his job and yet did and said nothing to authorities.

(3) The wife confesses that she knew he was planning this attack and "tried to talk him out of it" yet still managed to be with him when he purchased the weapons and then drove him an hour and a half away to Orlando so that he could scope out the Pulse nightclub for his impending attack.

The FBI did investigate him a few times but found nothing.  Not sure how they could not, it seems that if they talked to his wife, his friends, his classmates it was easy to see he hate America.

 

Unfortunate the Patriot Act has been scaled back and  now they can not spy on him or listen to his calls or track his email anymore

Oh that was so much fun to watch. He had her squirming. He said this morning that he was sick of seeing these politicians who opposed same sex marriage and supported laws that were against the LGBTQ community all of a sudden come on television after this tragedy and feign support for the community. He felt it was not only hypocritical, but that they were using this tragedy to get air time.
