lol! Which costume are you referring to? I personally enjoy Elizabeth's costumes and feel that the grandioseness of her costumes reflects the grandioseness of her (if that makes any sense). It reflects her status and who she is. Over the top? yes! But I feel that she, herself, was also over the top (the real Elizabeth I). I, too, love the Irish costumes, especially Grania's wedding dress and that green dress she wears!

Fraser will be in the Lead category and has an excellent chance of getting a nom. Balgord also has a good chance, her acting and singing are spot on. As far as the show closing right after the opening night; Not Gonna Happen, The Producers are in this for the long haul, I have mentioned before how RICH they are and people have thought I meant they will just throw money away to keep it up. I mean they have the money to find the audience and market this show well. The numbers for the previews have been outstanding, even with the discounts and the audiences are loving it. I have been wrong before so I could be wrong again but this is my educated prediction.

They would be dumb to petition Fraser in the leading category. He has a great shot as a featured actor. Balgord has no chance.
According to Todd Haimes, the artistic director of the Roundabout, the Van Dyke-Rivera strategy — casting a couple of talented no-names and crossing your fingers — is really a second choice these days. “Your first choice,” he said, “is to get a star who’s also great.”

| Yankee, who do you think will be nominated for Best Actress afetr seeing Block's performance?
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along. |

It's still going to be Ebersole (who'll win), Murphy, McDonald, Monk*, and either Chenoweth/Block/Bundy. Right now, I'd give Block the edge over Chenoweth, who ultimately performed her usual shtick, and I haven't seen Bundy yet. *If Monk is deemed featured, which is indeed possible, then Chenoweth will take that slot, leaving Block and Bundy to duke it out.

| Linda Balgord is incredible.

"They would be dumb to petition Fraser in the leading category. He has a great shot as a featured actor" It would seem to me they would petition to get him INTO featured, as opposed to INTO lead. He IS the lead male of the show. And I doubt Equity would take too kindly to producers fighting to get an actor into a featured category that they had to fight to bring over to the US from London. As far as I understand it, Equity only makes those concessions when it is proven that an actor is VITAL to the show. It would be hard to make that case if you throw him into Featured after fighting to have him in the US and giving him shared billing with The Pirate Queen herself. I can't see it happening, as much as it might work in his favor. I love his work, and think he'll deservedly get nominated in the category where he should be, as Lead Actor. -QB

"...we don't really learn why anything is going on. We don't know why Elizabeth and Grace magically come to a truce (I don't think we even know why Elizabeth wants Grace captured to begin with)." SPOILERS AHEAD!! Well...Elizabeth and Grace come to a truce, because they connect as women with the same basic female, motherly instincts. (ie Once Elizabeth learns that women are being mistreated and children are going hungry, she is sympathetic to Grace's cause.) Elizabeth wants Grace captured because Grace is both a pirate and a rebellious Irish chieftain. Near the end of the show, if you remember, Elizabeth makes all of the chieftains give up their crowns. Throughout the show, Grace commits acts which would be considered federal crimes against the crown of England (such as killing dozens of attacking British soldiers sent to "tame" Ireland). Thus, Elizabeth wants her captured. I don't know...all that came across pretty clearly to me.

| AEA also approved the transfer of Aine Ui Cheallaigh and she had a very minor role and no billing. Equity would rather see Fraser be nominated in any category (albeit featured) then left out as a lead.
"Have they come yet?" |

RE: Elizabethan "picnic table" dresses. They are historically accurate. The costumes are based on dresses from period portraits of Elizabeth. I don't understand the mindset of dumbing down the costumes to satisfy modern ignorance.

| As fantastical as the Elizabethan costumes are, I've got to say the hand-tooled leather coats sported by the Irish are outstanding. Worth bringing the binoculars to scope out the details.

"AEA also approved the transfer of Aine Ui Cheallaigh and she had a very minor role and no billing. Equity would rather see Fraser be nominated in any category (albeit featured) then left out as a lead." MyManCape- Interesting that you bring up Aine, as when I saw the show I wondered why on earth Equity did indeed approve of her taking a job from an American actor. While her traditional Irish singing voice is pleasant and interesting, her part is, well, a non-part really, and I had been wondering how they could have convinced Equity that she was vital to the shows success? Isn't that the criteria for allowing foreign actors to take American Equity jobs? That the show literally NEEDS that particular actor? Perhaps I'm mistaken. And could care less one way or the other if Mr. Fraser is nominated in any category. Or are you saying that maybe that would justify them allowing him to take this role (which I am VERY happy they allowed, as I LOVE his voice!)? Either way, it seems odd to me that Equity would support producers pushing for someone to be in a "lesser" (wrong term, I know) just so he has a better chance of being nominated. He's the male lead of the show. He'll get nominated as such. I hope! -QB

I agree, actually I loved THE PIRATE QUEEN actually I got kicked off another forum for calling a guy a twit (strong language eh?). I'm part of a Broadway Podcast in New York called Broadway Bullet, I do a segment called On The Positive Side. I want to know why so many people wish people to be out of work?I enjoyed every minute of THE PIRATE QUEEN, I find the end of act one (yes, even if it's manpulative) jaw dropping! I think that the public in general doesn't want ANOTHER pop opera, but in the season of varied choices, there's room for everything----keep Broadway employed!
