Talking about Criss' ability to make a killing at the box office for a bway show is relevant to this discussion. No one was considering him for any role in Wicked.

I have always thought a movie of Wicked could be far superior to the stage show. The SFX alone might be worth the price of admission. (I don't dislike Wicked, but I don't love it either.)

First off, thanks Nerwen and Choitoy.

I'm not trying to ignore KAD, sorry if I did. I agree he provides many helpful insightful information. My point was that with the track record Broadway has for celebrity casting (Daniel Radcliff, Nick Jonas, Jane Lynch.. It seems very unlikely, at least for me, for her not to be cast in a show. I know her draw is not as big as say Jennifer Lawrence, but it's certainly bigger than Raven Simone's or Cordin Bleu, who recently starred in broadway shows.

I agree with mama, let's go back to Wicked!! Updated On: 3/10/13 at 02:27 PM

I think Michele would get cast in CHICAGO in a heartbeat or something with the Roundabout, I don't think that at this point she'd get cast in shows that are trying to be more artistically fulfilling (Sher's FUNNY GIRL or the INTO THE WOODS at SitP). Her reputation would all but guarantee a terrible working space for everyone involved on and off stage (something that brings down morale, never a good thing for creating theatre magic), and more unfortunately, I think something happened throughout the years that made her go from a funny young actress with a great voice to a dull diva with a complete inability to get laughs or find subtlety in the songs she sings.

But yes, let's go back to WICKED. I could watch Jennifer Lawrence read the phone book at this point, her Tiffany is one of my favorite film characters in years, but in terms of people who'd be perfect for the role I can't get the idea of Hailee Steinfeld out of my head, I think she'd be terrific.

Haille is an interesting thought, she never would had crossed my mind in a million years for this Elphaba. Although I must say I see her more as Glinda. Does she sing?

You all know who my top choice is but could we discuss Gaga as Elphaba. I think that'd be beyond spectacular.

That's as close as you're going to get to having Gaga as Glinda. I can't think of one reason why she'd be good. We all know she's GAGA and it'll be all about GAGA. The story is more about Elphaba. There's really no point in discussing it because it won't happen.

"The magic that makes them glow on the stage just doesn't jump off the big screen. Some exceptions: Andrews, Streisand, Merman."

Disagree as to there being only "some" exceptions which prove the rule that genuine musical theater talents (the issue of whether this talent is veteran or latent is immaterial) are unable to create magic on film:

Astaire and Rogers, Judy Garland, Liza Minnelli, Paul Robson, Ann-Margret, Eartha Kitt, Glenn Close, Judi Dench, Danny Kaye, Lotte Lenya, Walter Huston, Raul Julia, Madeline Kahn, Lena Horne, Kevin Kline, Dolores Grey, Gene Kelly, Shirley Maclaine, Leslie Caron, Maurice Chevalier, Rex Harrison, Lee Remick, Yul Brynner, Glynis Johns, Ed Wynn, Ron Moody, Shani Wallace, Nelson Eddy, Jeanette McDonald, Carol Burnett, Rita Moreno, George Chakiris, Bert Lahr, Ray Bolger, Topol, Debbie Reynolds, Alisson Janney, Daniel Massey, Yvonne De Carlo, Mandy Patinkin, Alexis Smith, Ruby Keeler, Lauren Bacall, Jimmy Durante, Barbara Harris, Christopher Walken, John Travolta, Stockard Channing, Maurice Evans, Christine Baranski, Placido Domingo, Julia Migenes, Irene Dunne, Rosalind Russell, Antonio Banderas, Edward Woodward, Vivien Leigh, Jean-Pierre Aumont, Louis Jourdan, Catherine Zeta Jones, Patrick Wilson, Bea Arthur, Sian Phillips, Twiggy, Martha Plimpton, Dick Van Dyke, Meryl Streep, Elaine Stritch, Hermione Gingold, Bea Lillie, Maggie Smith, Samantha Barks, Hugh Jackman, Liliane Montevecchi, Celeste Holm, Lesley Ann Warren, Robert Preston, Shirley Jones, Edie Adams, Julie Newmar, Howard Da Silva, William Daniels, Ken Howard, Jack Gilford, Nancy Walker, Blair Brown, Betty Garrett, Robert Morse, Julie Harris, Danielle Darrieux, Estelle Parsons, Barbara Baxley, Margaret Hamilton, Jean Simmons, Pearl Bailey, Treat Williams, Ann Miller, Eleanor Powell, June Allyson, Betty Buckley, Helen Morgan, Betty Hutton, Tracy Ullman, Toni Collette, Joel Grey, Julie Walters, Jerry Orbach, Natasha Richardson, Alan Cumming, Victor Garber, Whoopi Goldberg, Anna Kendrick, Nathan Lane, Mae West, Diahann Carroll, Zero Mostel, Polly Bergen, Mickey Rooney

and, yes, indeed, Lansbury!

I didn't said Glinda, I said Elphaba.

Henrik, that's the guest list for my heaven induction ceremony . I only need Fosse, Gaga and Patti to complete the list.

Henrik, you rock as usual.

All That Jazz, what about Steinfeld makes you think of her as Glinda over Elphaba? I've only seen her in TRUE GRIT (not sure she's had other films before/after) but the kind of determination and strength of character she showed in that film makes me think she has what it takes for Elphaba, rather than the more comedic and sunny personality I'd expect from Glinda. Not to mention the fact that Steinfeld herself is beautiful but not in a conventional way, the way that someone like Jennifer Lawrence is just very pretty, so I think that'd add something to the performance.

I loved her in true grit, but i think she's too young and sweet to be Elphaba. Plus I don't even know if she can sing which to me is the most important factor.

I also think Elphaba needs more star quality. Updated On: 3/10/13 at 04:17 PM

If the movie happens soon, they can use the fame trajectories coming off of Les Mis for both Barks and Tviet. In case anyone has somehow missed this video, enjoy.

My vote would go to Hilty as Elphaba for the movie rather than Glinda, I'd just like the opportunity to hear her sing elphaba for a change. I see why people want Gaga for Glinda both are the appearance in everything kind of thing going on while also searching for some kind of deeper meaning in all that glitter and glimmer, though there is no way Gaga could sing it, Amneris would be another story but not Glinda.

Why does anyone think Gaga can ACT it?

Exactly, dramamama!
I don't think Glinda, or especially Elphaba, are incredibly well written roles, you need very strong actresses to pull them off in a film. The actress who plays Elphaba has to be determined without falling into cliches or surface readings of the character, that's where Lawrence would excel, she managed to find subtlety in Katniss working against a script that was anything but subtle. For Glinda you don't just need a personality (like Gaga), but you need someone who's able to find laughs without going for the easy, cheap laughs and of course, she has to make the transformation in the second act, making us feel sympathetic for Glinda when she could easily come off as pathetic or even villainous instead. You need real actresses for this.
How do people feel about double casting each role? A young actress for the earlier scenes, and then someone older for the second act stuff. What is an estimate time period the musical covers? I read the novel many years ago but from what I remember it covered a very long time period.

Because she IS an actress and she's trained in MT. You just have to watch her videos. If she couldn't act she wouldn't had been selected as one of the only 20 students from around the world to study MT at Tisch at age 17.

Which unto itself means nothing. No, I haven't seen her videos, I have no desire to do so, I do not like her arrogance nor her music.

Lady Gaga is my favorite pop star, and in my opinion the best of all time. She writes her own songs, she expresses herself as SHE wishes, she can dance, she can act, she can play the piano and can belt the hell out of her songs.

I respect your opinion and have no desire to impose mine upon you but if you have the opportunity, go see her live. Watching her concert was one of the highlights of my life. The woman has more star power than all of current Hollywood combined an has EXTRAORDINARYLY AMAZING control over the audience. She even sang West Side Story. She just exudes talent.

Yes and I was quite disappointed with how little she sang in it. I enjoyed what I heard and am sure she would only improve if given the chance to become more familiar with the role. Why what was your impression Wynbish?

I liked it (although it seemed like it favored Shoshanna showing off her soprano and, in one of the videos, Megan seemed sick). I think that her work on Smash has improved her voice.

Speaking of Angela Lansbury, she would make a great Madame Morrible.
