Not Broadway, but still pretty awkward: The weekend Chicago Altar Boyz was closing, I decided to rush the show by myself. Afterwards, I was hanging around the lobby, waiting to meet up with some friends in the city. It was my 8th time seeing the show, and I had met most of the actors at one time or another, so I was pretty comfortable just chilling there. Anyway, while I was waiting, Nick Verina (the Chicago Abe) nervously approached me and asked if I had sent him flowers because someone did and didn't sign the card. I told him that I hadn't and then tried to make some joke about how someone else must be competing with me for his affections, except he totally didn't get that I was joking. Then I told him that I'm married and would never do anything like that, and he was noticeably relieved. Yeah, awkward.

Ug, those paint pens can be horrible. First you have to shake them and then you have to press the tip down to get the paint running.

I know I've had some of my own but I'm too tired to think.

One that strikes me right away is when my best friend and I went to see Spring Awakening. We were at the stage door because she was fan-girly and wanted to meet Groff. Matt Doyle came out and I got fan-boy-y and wanted a picture with him. After succeeding in that, she wanted one with him too.
While turning around, she somehow slipped and fell right into his arms, almost knocking him to the ground. He started laughing so hard and almost began tearing. It was a hysterical moment and I caught the end result on camera. I'll try and find the picture somewhere.

(Can I get a whoop-whoop for Doyle love?)

After seeing Thoroughly Modern Millie with Dixie Carter, my mom at the stage door tells Dixie how much she LOVED her singing "Amazing Grace" on Designing Women. Dixie looked at her like "I don't remember that episode", and then the lightbulb came on and she goes "OH! You mean how great thou art?" My mother about died from embarassment.

I don't know if I would fully call this a stage door experience but it was an experience none the less. I saw Tim Hower when he was in Rent. He was talking to a couple of people me being one of them after the usual stage door crowed left and died down. Everyone left and it was Tim and me talking etc. We both ended up walking and talking on our way towards the subway. We didn't realize that we were both going the same direction on the same line so we were just walking and talking on our way to the subway. Someone stopped him on the platform and asked if he was in Rent because she thought that she recognized him. He said yes and gave her an autograph and chatted with her for a second and then went right back to talking to me. I found it funny while we were on our way to the subway he joked about how he was in NYC for a bit and still the subway system was confusing the hell out of him. I commented that the NYC subway system is a confusing one if you don't know really know your way around it. Fun, yes. It was just interesting how this wasn't planned out at all and I didn't intentionally walk with him etc and it just happened.

Wow, some of these are hilarious! Mine's not so great, but I like it:

The last time the tour of "Evita" stopped in Atlanta, Kathy Voytko was playing Eva. Now, I had just spent over 2 hours watching this woman from the 4th row, and staring at the program photos, so I figured I'd know who to look for at the stagedoor. A woman came out wearing sunglasses, signed a few autographs, and moved on down the sidewalk. My friend and I were convinced that it was her, so we followed, but we lost her in the crowd. We were walking back towards the Fox Theatre, when I noticed a woman coming down the sidewalk who looked very familiar. The following exchange then happened:

--"Excuse me? Weren't you in Evita?"
--"Yes, I was!" (starts signing program)
--"Oh thank you! Who did you play?"
--"I was Eva!"

Thank God she laughed about it. My friend and I complimented her on her performance and we walked with her down the sidewlak to the corner. She fell in love with my friend's mini Sharpie, so we gave it to her!

So, awkward, but quickly and wonderfuly remedied!

And I just remembered this one from when "Phantom" came to Atlanta. Gary Mauer and Beth Southard were in the lead roles. When they came out, I got pictures and autographs, and then I asked Gary to sign the "Music of the Night" photo of the two of them I had printed from their website. He laughed, commenting on how nice it was to see that picture since it's not printed too often. When I finally got it to Beth (after the crowd had died down and she was just kind of standing around), she cringed because the photo wasn't retouched like the program inserts. We ended up having a brief chat while my friend went inside to find the T-shirt she had dropped on the way out.

Again, not really that awkward, but I'm sure she wasn't expecting to see that picture.

And my last on, I promise: "Sweeney Todd" tour stops in Atlanta (bet you can't guess where I live?). My friend and I (it's a different friend each time, by the way, in case anyone was wondering) were so exicted to have met the whole cast EXCEPT David Hess, who was not out yet. Judy Kaye had just left us, and he came out. I had a silver paint pen the actors had been using, and I tested it to make sure it was still good. I had to give it a shake, but I got it working. Unfortunately, I got a blob of silver paint on my friend's face, just before we were going to meet David Hess. She was a little pissed, but we arranged ourselves in the photo so that you couldn't see that side of her face.

Okay, I'm done. I swear.

Not really a stage door experience, but when I was Sandy Duncan's dresser I spent a lot of time with her in her dressing room, and somehow they let a fan come backstage and someone escorts the fan right into the dressing room where her and I are standing there kind of dumbfounded. He begins to freak out and talk non stop. Every coupld of seconds Sandy would look over at me and give me the "dear god this is enough" glare until he left. She was very nice to him though, and I offered to take a pucture of them with his cell phone....all INSIDE of her dressing room. hah

Okay, I lied; I have one more!

When I saw "Curtains" with my school group, we went to the stagedoor and met the cast a got their autographs and blah, blah, blah. The only one we didn't get was David Hyde Pierce because we'de been there for at least 20 minutes, and we simply HAD to keep our appointment to go to the Top of the Rock (lovely view, by the way).

The awkward part: When we got home, one of the girls was informed by her mom and dad that Karen Ziemba is her cousin by marriage! Not awkward for me, but my friend felt kind of odd later when she found out she got her autograph and had her picture taken with her...and had no idea about the relation!

Cool part: her dad met some clients in NYC and arranged it with Karen so they could go backstage and meet her and David Hyde Pierce. Lucky. She said that once "Curtains" is done she'll probably take a little vacation, and they're trying to arrange it so that she and her husbadn can come be guest speakers at a drama club meeting next year!

Of course I just graduated....damn...

Okay, now I'm really done. If/when I get to see Patti in "Gypsy," you bet I'll have another one for you!

After "Sweet Smell of Success," John Lithgow came pompously out wearing his usual beret, and my mother took it upon herself to "take him down a few pegs." She sidled up and said, "Excuse me, Mr. Lithgow - I have a question. Do you know the Muffin Man?" He kind of smirked, chuckled haughtily and responded, "The Muffin Man?"

I seem to have amusing SD moments instead of awkward. Especially with Lindsay K. Northen from Wicked. I did have an awkward SD meeting with Cristy Candler on 5/4/08 though. I couldn't get the lid off of my Sharpie and when I finally got it off Cristy was about a foot from me and looked terrified that I was gonna stab her with my Sharpie. Either that or write on her beautiful white coat. I met her again yesterday and she remembered what had happened when she seen me carefully taking the lid off of the Sharpie...LOL.

A few years ago at the Avenue Q stage door, I dropped my sharpie and it rolled back behind the stage door. Stephanie D'Abruzzo walked back and got it for me.

About 5 years ago or so, I went to the Wicked stage door before the show and Kristin Chenoweth was nice enough to talk to the few people who were there. While I was talking to her, my step father came over and starting telling her all these community theaters I'd worked with in my hometown. He name dropped them like they were famous or something. "Yeah, she's done shows with the Orlando Youth Theater!!" So awkward. Luckily Kristin thought it was sweet.

A few months later I saw Idina at the stage door, and the whole experience was totally awkward. I know people say she's shy and everything but man. She looked like she was horrified/disgusted to see anyone at the stage door. She was making her way down the line looking like she wanted to punch someone and just as she reached me, my mother said to another person in the crowd that Idina was my idol (at the time). Idina heard her and she looked up at me. My mom happened to snap a picture right at that moment, and Idina was looking at me like I was a three-headed monster or something. I don't like looking at the picture anymore because it just makes me feel bad about myself, for some reason.

It was awkward for me. Jonathan Groff, when he was signing my Playbill says to me "I like your shorts." I didn't expect him to say anything to me, let alone a compliment. After he signs he looks up at me with a charming glare and smiles. There are a bunch of girls by me and he goes back into the theatre but before doing so tells me to "Have a good day" and winks. One of the girls turns to me and kind of yells "You should get on that" while the other cast members that are out there signing and the group of girls start to laugh. It was interestingly awkward.

This wasn't me (fortunately), but I was with some friends at the stage door of Drowsy Chaperone waiting for Bob Saget to come out. When he did, some guy next to me was like "Hey dude it's Danny Tanner!" Bob gave the guy a look than he smiled and said "Hey guys sorry I can't stay to long, I have to go meet Michelle, Stephanie and DJ for dinner." (or something to that affect). Bob was a good sport.

This isn't really awkward or Broadway, or even Stage Door, but I was in Hollywood walking down the street, and this guy in one of those tour buses gave a really audible honk and whistle, and so I look around and I see DJ Gregory of Wicked LA in his car with his dog...and he was just kind of smirking at the fact at how surprised I was to see a tour guide whistling at me...it was a kind of awkward exchange.
