I don't think I saw anyone predict that it would remain a big hit without a name, that was obvious whenever Groban called out and the sales went down. People were very pleasantly surprised it was making it to $900k the last two weeks and that's WITH Ingrid.

This is a remarkably forthright statement from Malloy. Still, I imagine many of the people who've already constructed their own narrative around this won't be swayed by any amount of empirical evidence, and will continue to look at this as whitewashing.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

I want to see it again, but would like to know the Pierre."

Mandy was the big name coming in. They're going to (edit: have) to pull another rabbit out of the hat to make it past Labor Day.

Issuing these straightforward apologies is the right thing to do.

I still fear it's too little, too late.

But I hope for the best for this very special show.

Glad I acted rashly and got tickets to one of the Patinkin shows. Have tickets for December and now looks like it may not be around. I love this show, and have a ton of respect for Malloy. Didn't realize things were so dire, but I'm shocked people actually thought this was about race

This is just so sad. Even sadder when you realize if they had won some more awards, that they rightfully deserve, the situation would be so much different. Makes me laugh the most innovative, diverse, and creative Broadway show of the year lost to a show that's the exact opposite.

This whole thing has been blow ridiculously out of proportion. It's really quite simple: Oak won't sell nearly as many tickets as Mandy will. They made a business decision.

"We had the wrong impression of how Oak felt about the casting announcement"

Really? Anyone else feel that was a very poor way to word that? So, you didn't know how your lead actor would feel about being replaced? They make it sound like he found out via the casting announcement.

So do they have any sort of a plan after Patinkin's short run is over? Try to talk Groban back for a limited run? Look for another big name for a short run? Call Lin and throw cash at him? /s

Curious to know if that rabbit has already been found or they're still digging around for it. Or if none of that matters now that Mandy is leaving.

Also, can't wait to hear any details re: Mandy leaving, since you have legit info.  (That's not sarcasm, I mean it.)

Mandy left, so... if the production announces closing today... can you maybe predict the powerball numbers?!!! Lol

This is actually pretty sad. Damn you twitter.

Sure. I get that. But the producers should have done a better job at communicating things. I understand they had to make some tough choices that impacted some of their people, but they've handled it so clumsily in Oak's case and were so tone deaf and uncoordinated. Dave's recent Tweets though heartfelt, exposed them even more and it's clear now that they were doing firing and hiring for sometime now. Ingrid's announcement replacement was done seamlessly without controversy, no one would have thought that Brittain was phased out. The public will always side with a personal angle than a show's financials.

I feel terrible for sweet Dave. He seems like the idealistic artist type and it's a ****ty reality that business and politics control everything, even in the arts world.

This.  I met him and he seemed like a such a genuine, great guy. I feel for everyone who could soon be out of a job.

It's really unfortunate that come Labor Day we could lose 3 shows at once. (GHD, Bandstand, GC)

And not War Paint?  Is there bias there or do you really think it is going to survive the mid-August business drop?

I actually do think it should have won for its direction (of course I don't think it should have won for the lighting, which gave me a headache).  But there was nothing else that it was ever in serious contention for.

I am very impressed with Dave Malloy...he already knew HE wasn't going to sell tickets; i wonder if he actually thought Oak would or just stayed out of the selection process when the chose Oak.  If the gimmick of the composer appearing can't sell tickets, why would an unknown?
