Thursday Matinees

Count me in this club! I'm looking forward to it even more for my trip this week since a new Raoul is starting today.
 

Wow there are three of us already! Already have my Phantom tix for Spring Break and Memorial Day weekend. I typically see the show about 6 times a year. I appreciate the Thursday matinee because now I can still see a new show while still reserving a slot for the Phantom. Whenever I see it, I feel like i'm surrounded by American tourists who saw the show on tour years ago and are now seeing it on Broadway for the first time. Just a general observation.

I have been going to see Phantom on Thursday matinees during my long-weekend trips to NYC ever since they added them to the schedule.  I do usually check out other shows that i haven't seen before when they offer Thursday matinees, and have recently seen Cagney, Shear Madness, and Not That Jewish during that time slot.  But Phantom most consistently offers it, so they've gotten most of my ticket purchases for that time slot in my last few years of trips.

I'm both excited and nervous about this. Excited because Kyle Barisich is leaving the role (he does absolutely nothing for me), but nervous because I don't know anything about Mr. Ingram except that he comes from Aladdin. Can he sing?

After my experience a couple of weeks ago, I will try to avoid the Thursday matinee in the future, if possible. The audience was beyond horrible. The theatre was overrun with loud, ill-behaved groups of kids and crass adults. Reprehensible behavior - eating, laughing, cell phone/camera use - all around.

I've lost count of the number of times I've seen this show, and on various days of the week, but I've never before had an experience like this. When I commented to an usher, he advised me that the Thursday matinee is always like that.

"Any time I've seen Phantom and sat in the mezz, or worse, the rear mezz, yes, it was a terrible experience with students openly talking, eating, texting, filming and the ushers and chaperones doing absolutely nothing to stop it. I'm obviously not going to to stop seeing Phantom, so I just always sit in the front orchestra. I never have any problems down there and the ushers are aggressive.

I always sit in the orchestra as well, and I do agree that the ushers down there are more aggressive, but in this case they simply couldn't reign in the out-of-control mob of unbelievably crass people.

Nope, only difference, like you said is the Sunday/Monday thing. Not sure what the person who said 'If you want to see a matinee on a variety of days in the week, go to London' meant because we generally have Wednesday and Saturday matinees the same as NY.

I'll let you know Thursday afternoon  

And I also always sit front orchestra to try to avoid the loud large groups and I've been lucky for the most part. (in general I try to always sit as close to the stage as I can because it seems to reduce the chances of sitting around loud obnoxious people)

I believe Phantom still has a monopoly on Thursday afternoons.

I noticed that the Thursday matinee, when I went, was reserved more for field trips from surrounding area schools rather than tourists. For that, I'm thankful that they offer it!

It's off-Broadway at New World Stages, but next Thursday, 8/10, The Government Inspector has a Thursday matinee.

Not true.

The main matinee day is pretty evenly split between a  Wednesday and a Thursday. There have also been a number of shows doing Tuesday matinees recently but most of those shows have or are closing (The Girls, Beautiful, Jersey Boys). A handful of shows also do Sunday matinees/evenings. Much easier to see more shows on a trip to London

The York Theatre has added Thursday matinees to all their shows, both Mufti and mainstage. They also do a lot of midweek readings that are often on Monday or Tuesday afternoons so you might get on their mailing list.

Funny we were discussing groups at the Phantom Thursday matinees.  I had never encountered this til today.  There were two rows of Day campers behind me in the orchestra section.  I was so mad and ready to shush the heck out of them.  But all they did was gasp and ohhh and ahhh over all the special effects and of course the kissing.  It was very cute.  And props to those chaperones.

They exhaust me. I've been to the Thursday matinee twice this year and the extremely young audience was maddening both times. The last time I was seated near the front of the center orchestra and there was a string of 10-12 year old boys filling the remainder of the row to my left who talked throughout the entire first act. At the intermission, I turned to them and said, "Excuse me, but would you please tell me how much you paid for your ticket to this show?" They looked sheepish and replied that they didn't know because they didn't pay for them. I replied, "Well, mine cost me almost $150 and I paid that to hear the people on the stage, not you." They got very quiet and I left to use the restroom; when I returned, the one nearest to me apologized and promised that they'd be quiet for the remainder of the show. Throughout the second act, he shushed the others every time they started talking.
