Because...they're...actors? And not politicians? I go to the movies and see shows to see these talented people do their craft. I don't give a hoot what their politics are. I'm not alone in this—if Americans actually gave a crap about celebrities' politics, Hillary would be our president-elect.

Meryl Streep was not on the clock last night. She was not earning a salary for acting. Actors attend award ceremonies or galas or whatever on their own time. Hence why they sometimes don't show up at all.

She was not speaking as, or even trying to resemble, a politician.

Moreover, your implication here is that only certain people should speak out about politics; namely, politicians (I assume this would extend to political commentators, pundits, etc. since speaking about politics is their profession).  Which is awfully undemocratic. You're essentially saying that a group of private citizens with the rare access to a massive public platform should just stifle their dissent.

People discredit Meryl Streep and the liberal "Hollyweird," but it's the Republicans who have nominated and elected a celebrity to the highest office in the land. Twice.

Oh, not at all. I'll defend to the death Meryl Streep or any other American's right to speak freely. That's the essence of our nation. But I really don't understand what the point of this speech was. It just sounded like whining to me. Further, I truthfully still don't care about any actor's personal politics. I'd feel the same way if my barber talked politics while cutting my hair, or if my doctor talked politics when treating me. Hooray that you're engaged—but I don't care.

Also, I'd be fascinated to see all your reactions if a celebrity made a speech expressing satisfaction or acceptance with President-elect Trump, or made a call for unity. I predict there would be outrage and hysteria.

Lastly, Jordan, I'm the same username I've always used, and Adair, Trump is neither a racist, misogynist, or homophobe. I would never throw my support to somebody who espoused those views.

Moreover, I think it's safe to say that the narrative of Hollywood liberal elitism played at least somewhat of a role in frustrating swaths of the electorate to the point of Hillary losing votes.

I'm not alone in this—if Americans actually gave a crap about celebrities' politics, Hillary would be our president-elect.

So which is it?  Americans voted for Trump because they do care about celebrities' politics or they don't?

I go to the movies and see shows to see these talented people do their craft. I don't give a hoot what their politics are.

Your ambivalence doesn't make the person apolitical.  Just like Streep doesn't give a hoot that you support Captain Creamsicle.  She doesn't have to.  And clearly, she's prioritized her political view above her career (she can afford to).

He is indeed all those things, as well as many others: megalomaniac, xenophobe, and bully.  One needn't one or more of those to support him, but you'd have to be a complete idiot to stand alongside white supremacists and Putin and claim innocence.

It just sounded like whining to me.

You want points for the buzz word "whining"?  Fine, we'll go with whatever your definition appears to be.  You're whining about Streep.  You're whining about Hollywood liberal elites.  You're whining about hearing the political opinions of other people...while giving your political opinions.  You whine ALL THE TIME.

Who the hell are you that you don't care what a barber or an actor thinks about politics and yet you come to the off topic board of a Broadway web site to post your ill informed whinings every day. People here are having actual discussions about current events, politics, and the future of our country and all you can do is whine at people to stop whiiiiining.

Trump is not homophobic, misogynistic, xenophobic, or racist. And I stand by that. I reject the mainstream media's narrative of him.

Kad, I'm not going to dictate who "should" speak publicly about politics. That's not American. I've never once said that Streep *should not* have given her speech—I've simply questioned the merits of her words and her intent. I've also never said celebrities *should not* speak about their politics; I've just voiced the facts that a) I don't care about their political opinions, and b) that many, many other Americans clearly don't. There's clearly some barrier between the views held of elite Hollywood liberals and an overwhelming chunk of the American electorate, so why continue to shove such views down our throats after Hillary's embarrassing show in November?

Mister Matt, why are you so deeply angry? Here's the difference in our views of whining. I am challenging and questioning the words and thoughts of those who have willingly entered into the public forum. Such words and thoughts, however, are coming from people who put quotation marks around the term President-elect when mentioning Trump and refuse to accept the reality or "normalcy" of today's state of affairs. That's petulance, and that's whining.

BeadleDeedle, I don't even know who you are, but I'm perplexed why you think my presence in this conversation is somehow inferior to those who hold the view that Streep was completely in the right here. This is exactly what I meant when I said "Tolerance toward all—except those with whom you disagree."

Good lord, there's never any winning with you people.

They should have all ignored the Trump topic all together last night. Any talk of him positive or negative just gives him more credence and he is not worthy of any kind of focus.

I disagree.  To ignore him is foolish and to discontinue the discussion is dangerous.  We're entering unprecedented territory and it should not be dismissed for anything, especially the whining conservative elite like the "First Family" elect and their supporters.

Probably.  They congratulate each other constantly.  I can't get the image of the trophies the sons bagged in Africa out of my head.

Yeah, I'm sure that's what you're thinking every time Melabia and her new American family steps onto a red carpet from a limo or helicopter.  Please.  As long as they look gorgeous on the red carpet, you don't care what they do or say.

Still, nobody has provided an actual, tangible reason for Streep to offer the words that she did. It can't have been to influence an election, because now that's two months behind us. All it did was appeal to those who dislike Trump, make them/you feel warm and fuzzy inside to be able to relate to an important Hollywood actor, and further piss off those who voted for Trump and resent the liberal Hollywood elite. Honestly, regardless of my personal feelings for Trump, I truly believe that if actors like Streep keep up that shtick for the next four years, we're looking at a landslide victory for Trump 2020.
