What AC126748 said is 100% true. The two screens on either side of the stage at the Tonys in '04 read BEST MUSICAL - WICKED. If I recall correctly, they didn't even change it to say AVENUE Q - they just took it off the screens altogether after about 15 seconds or so.

Current Avatar: Cynthia Erivo, bringing down the house in The Color Purple.

The whole show brings back remarkable memories of that season! This is an upload of the complete show ( 2 hours and 8 minutes), but you can fastforward to 1'54" if you only want to check out the awards for Best Actress-Musical, Best Actor-Musical, and Best Musical.

AC126748 said: "WICKED was so expected to win that, if I recall correctly, it was already pre-loaded into the projection screens onstage and it briefly flashed "Best Musical: Wicked" before it was changed. Can anyone corroborate that?"

This New York Times article corroborates it, and also says: "For weeks ''Wicked'' had been considered a prohibitive favorite to win the award, the evening's top prize."

Best Musical should have gone to Wicked, but score, book, and actress should've gone to Caroline, or Change.
