"Real Oneals" Noah Galvin's Vulture interview

For me, his interview was similar to Tom Cruise' and Mel Gibson's examples of over-sharing RE: their personal life opinions. Galvin's content differed from theirs, but because his delivery was so over-the-top zealous, I'm going to have a difficult time erasing it from my memory when I see him on TV.

What is the difference between Galvin's comments on Haynes and how most people talk about someone like Queen Latifah, who's clearly living in a glass closet but won't actually come out? I mean, maybe Galvin's comments were outwardly harsher, but the underlying sentiment is the same- that it is kind of cowardly to be in this coy glass closet scenario and then come out years later because enough people are spreading the rumors anyway. Would the anger over his comments be different if Haynes were not a muscular white man who could pass as straight? Because, let's be honest, in the gay community anyone that looks like he does tends to be treated better than someone who is more obviously gay. How many shirtless straight white guys are on the cover of gay magazines every month? I'm sure Haynes is a perfectly nice guy, but I don't think Galvin would have nearly gotten the blowback he has if he said something similar about someone like Travolta or Latifah or even Jodie Foster.

The difference is that Colton is still a young man trying to figure his life out. He's just breaking into the industry and really figuring out who he is. He's not a 60 year old man who's been living a lie for decades. He came out in his 20s when he was ready. Who is Galvin to judge when he was ready to do so?

Haynes has been working since 2007, and he's been a series regular on two network television series, whereas this is Galvin's first film or television credit entirely. Not to mention, Haynes was apparently out to family and friends, so it could be argued that he purposefully stayed silent about his sexuality in order to have greater success in Hollywood. Maybe that's not decades of living a lie, but it's covering up his sexuality in order to get ahead, which isn't so far off.

Look, I'm not saying that Colton Haynes is a terrible person or that he should be ashamed. I think Galvin's comments were more geared toward the way Hollywood (and the culture at large) treats these coming out narratives as if every single one has to be lauded, especially when they're people who look like Colton Haynes. And if you're someone who gets told that your "too gay" in auditions to do anything but play the gay stereotype, seeing a straight-passing guy get lauded for coming out has to be a bit frustrating. In other words, it's seen as brave for someone like Haynes to come out because he had the option of staying in, and I don't think Galvin really had that choice because of the way Hollywood looks at gay actors.

I think you're making a lot of interesting and true points, but there's a huge difference between what you're eloquently writing here and what came out of Galvin's mouth. If these were indeed the points he was trying to make he should have spoken in generalities and not targeted certain people. I think if he had we would have all thought he was an intelligent guy with well-thought out and spoken ideas. 

 

Instead it read like Galvin was bitter and nasty with personal axes to grind. It made it look like they were in some Katy Perry/Taylor Swift feud, when in fact they have never even met or communicated (except for Colton tweeting Galvin that he should win an Emmy for his work on Real O'Neals!). 

 

If he was attempting to make some salient critiques about the way gay people are treated in Hollywood those thoughts were completely obscured by his bitterness and badmouthing. If anything is remembered from this interview it will be his insults about Stonestreet, Haynes and Singer. 

 

For someone just starting out in the film/tv side of the industry he sure thinks very highly of himself. Humility and grace usually get you a lot further in this business than slander and jabs. Maybe Colton has gotten so far (aside from talent) by being a likeable and humble guy that people enjoy working with. Did that ever cross Galvin's mind, or does he attribute all of Colton's successes to his ability to play it straight.

Noah comes across like a bitchy young queen. Any gay man living in a major city probably knows a dozen guys who talk exactly like Noah talks in this interview. Some folks like Jeffery Self have basically made a career out of being a bitchy young queen. I think what has bothered so many people is that Noah plays a sort of wholesome, palatable gay character and that's not who he is in real life. There's also a healthy dose of respectability politics at play here.

I doubt Noah has had much experience dealing with the media. Once a solid PR team gets their hands on him, I'm sure he'll start coming off very different in interviews.

As far as I'm concerned, apology accepted. He's young. Maybe he was having a cranky day. I actually didn't think the interview was all that bitchy, Well...maybe a little, but I think because he plays younger and more naive on the show, his candidness may have come as a surprise to some. He's a 22 year old actor who's been in the business for some time. He's allowed to have opinions. But for the sake of his career, he should probably keep those concerning others in the industry to himself.

Looks like Noah's comments almost cost The Real O'Neals part of their second season.

When word spread that ABC was considering reducing the sitcom’s order, one of the show’s exec producers begged the network not to take action, per THR. The trade goes on to note that this wasn’t Galvin’s first run-in with ABC brass. The network reportedly warned him on multiple occasions about his “ego” and sense of “entitlement.” (ABC declined to comment.)

It's very clear it's sour grapes. He's a very unpleasant person. He won't be long for this industry. He'll only get more acidic with age. If he is making such hateful statements this young I worry for him.

That's different than being upset that he's not as pretty as Colton though-or at least more complex. 

I dontvthink the interview was sour grapes though. I think everything-from apparently the start where he waited for the interviewer smoking a cigarette-was about some sorta tough, different from his character image he wanted to project in his first major interview. Clearly--while I suspect his opinions reflect how he is in real life--he wanted to create a persona. And it backfired hard.
