GLASS MENAGERIE revival this fall, starring Sally Field - Directed by Sam Gold?

This was the Broadway play I auditioned for in Feb.! Am I disappointed I didn't get the part? Oh heck no! I knew I didn't had a chance. Ha ha! So happy for Madison and I can't wait to see how she does!

Very conflicted feelings about this. The 2013 revival was the first time I ever saw Menagerie, and I feel in love and it is one of my all time favorite plays. This feels very, very soon.

LOL @ the histrionics of standingovation79.  Calm down, girl.  It's one of the most beloved plays of the 20th c and, of course, offers one of the best parts in the theatre for actresses of a certain age.  I expect it to be revived several more times in my lifetime.  I'm actually more excited about Joe Mantello.  You just KNOW that he has Tom in his bones.  I'm expecting this to rival his work in The Normal Heart.

People were complaining that The Color Purple and Spring Awakening were too soon, this just seems ridiculous.  But Sally Field is amazing.

In next year's mayoral race, I will vote for whichever candidate promises a 30 year moratorium on New York revivals of "Gypsy" and "The Glass Menagerie."

Where are all of you complainers when we get millions or revivals of Hamlet, A Midsummer Night's Dream, or The Tempest? Yes, it's soon after the last revival, but it's one of the greatest plays ever written, starring a cast of great actors and directed by a terrific director. There are so many worse things that could be on Broadway than this.

Hamlet - 7 Broadway productions in 53 years

Midsummer - 2  in the same time period

Tempest - 1 in the same time period.

 

But really, people will complain about everything here.  Why are they producing it?  They have the team they want, the actors they want and the financing they need.  Will the audience be there?  Who knows.

I saw the Cherry Jones production and LOVED it and still, I cannot WAIT for this Sam Gold production! Joe Mantello is wonderful on stage and I've yet to see Sam Gold disappoint. February cannot come soon enough!

This looks to be a very different production from the Cherry Jones revival. More in tune with Ivo's work / Streetcar @ St. Ann's. I'm eager to see what Sam Gold concocts; Sally Field is sublime.

If you think it is too soon, don't go.

I decided about 8 years ago that I was all Gypsyed out for awhile, and I decided to skip it.  (I could have seen it after the reviews and after the Tony's, but I just wasn't ready.  I was fine with that.

I figure that probably 100,000 people or so attended the last production.  That is not a lot of people.  I suspect that Sally Field will attract an audience that includes people who have never seen a production of Menagerie, and that is a good thing. 

I am really looking forward to it, which is ironic, given that I was never a big fan until the last production.

Given how well received the most recent revival was, I think comparisons might just be inevitable. And Sam Gold has so far had a pretty spotty track record on Broadway.

Interesting cast ages - I wonder if Mantello will dye his hair dark so as not to look the 22 years older than Jim (31 year old Wittrock) that he is; or the 30-something years older than Laura (20-something Ferris) that he is. Of course, 69 seems awfully old to have a 20 something year old daughter, but I've no doubt that most audiences will passively accept the hair dye and face lift and think of Field as a sort of perpetual Norma Rae.

I also have no doubt that Field and Mantello will be terrific in their roles.

As has been discussed, it's a memory play.

Oh, yes, discussed ad infinitum; that doesn't change the fact that it's highly improbable that Tom would still be in the Merchant Marine 30 years after leaving home, or that a post-middle-age Tom engaging with vastly younger actors in the "memory" scenes (which are 99% of the play) seems odd; nor does it address Field's advanced age. But, as I said, most audiences passively accept such things, particularly when paying $125 for a ticket.

Wittrock has a busy season- he's in Sam Gold's other major revival this season, Othello at NYTW with Daniel Craig, until Jan. 17. Kind of surprising he's doing two shows with overlapping performance/rehearsal time.

To be fair, he's only in the latter half of Menagerie.

I was surprised that Wittrock took on Cassio, which is a rather thankless part. But perhaps he wanted the experience of being in a high-profile production and working with Craig and Oyelowo.
